For one who cannot afford to get everthing at once, what is the recommended order for purchasing undercarriage protection (diff guards, sliders, etc.)

The wife was a long for the first time I had to use 4 low with diff lock and she now thinks we need some additional protection!

I would say get Diff Guards first, then sliders, then maybe a gas tank skid plate. A hole in your diff will leave you stuck. I bent sill won't.

I'll agree....

Front diff-guard first, rear diff guard w/ pinion protection, sliders....

That's all you NEED, IMHO.... the rest are sexy, mostly.... yeah, I can see wanting a gas-tank guard, but it can cause problems.....

IMHO, FWIW......

You will want a rear bumper after you bend up your stock one. It is a good idea to get it before you bend it so you can sell it somebody else who bent theirs up!

I think any protection you buy should offer the most protection for that component. So, in terms of a rear bumper, I personally prefer something that protects the fender area behind the rear tire. However, most require to trim that area, so there is a catch 22 for ya! Trim vs. bash will be your deciding factor.

Sliders and diff guards should probably be first. Even with just those items, you are better protected underneath than most of the Discos that I see on or off road. There's a wide variety of skid plates out there but you need to evaluate your driving habits to see if its worth the cost/effort.

Personally, I chose the sliders first because I have a hi-lift jack and got tired of not having any damned place on the Disco that served as a jacking point without crushing, shredding, falling off, etc.

I am now getting ready to add the diff guards.

Just my .02 cents worth.
