those of you that have the Garmin 176. how and where did you mount the unit. i was unable to find a 'car' adaptor for this unit. want something pretty beefy as i don't want it falling over when i hit the trails hard or push on it hard. thought about just screwing the damn thing in the dash. i know there is a mount for the windshield, but am not to sure i like that idea. would like to mount it in that tray thing on top of the dash, but the mount it comes with does not fit in there well at all. TIA |

Check out this link for some mounts: http://www.gps4fun.com/rammount_gar_176.html How do you like the 176? Thats the one I am thinking of getting. Chris von C |

i am not sure how different the dimensions are for the 176 are from the streetpilot, but i put my streetpilot on where the rubber coin mat goes on top of the radio... i removed the little rubber mat, and secured the unit using velcro. it stays there pretty solidly. |

thanks for the link. still looks like i need to drill in my dash. oh well. i originally had the garmin gps V and recently sent it back to get the 176. main reason was the size of the screen. the V is just too damn small. the only thing the V has over the 176 is the turn-by-turn directions. that's it. well and it comes with 19mb of ram and the 176 has just the base map preloaded. but you can put up to 128 mb ram in the 176. i think i will stick to 32 for now. the 176 does take batteries so it can be portable too. the 176 has a higher resolution screen as well. but back to the main reason.......the bigger screen. will be much nicer for sure. is about $60 more i think. now i just have to find a place to put the damn thing. the mount it comes with makes it easy to take it out in case you are in a town that you are not happy with keeping goods like that in plain view. of course i would recommend getting the 176. the big screen makes it worth it. has tons of great features that just about anything else out there has. oh another thing......you can scroll with the map on the screen. to see where you are heading. and it comes preloaded with 'blue charts' too. in case you have a boat or will have one. because it really is a chartplotter. you will be happy with it if you go that route i am sure. best prices are: http://www.selectzone.com/ or try EBay. they had a few on there for a little less than selectzone. |

ho. i was hoping to do that too. but the 176 seems to be heavier than the streetpilot and the mount is much bigger. it still may work, but just not fit in that tray very easy. here is a pic of the unit and base. the base is about 2 1/2" in dia. ps: trying to convince myself the V was 'the shit' did not pan out!!

looks like it could work if you take off the mounting bracket. i mounted my streetpilot without any mounting bracket. just the GPS unit itself. |

well then i cannot take it off quickly when i venture out of pennsyltucky. actually the separate mounting piece (on the bottom) is the same as the fixed piece that mounts to it. so either way it is the same size. oh well. maybe i will be able to turn the bracket so that i only have to use 2 or the 3 mounting holes. and get them to line up in the tray. i will do some messing around with it and see what happens. anyone know how deep you can go with screws in that tray? the stereo can't be too far down. that would be bad. |

I will try to take a pic of my 176 setup tonight. I basically screwed the mount into the dash. There is a hard plastic underlying shell under the softer foam outter skin that you need to get the screw to bit into. Brian |

Brian H's setup is sweet. I was driving slightly behind and to the left of him at Truckhaven and I could literally read his display from my truck as we drove overland "blind" on the way back to camp. I have an older Garmin but it has the same rotary mount. I've made a mount consisting of the bottom of a sawed-off Guiness can so I can plop it in the drink holder, but I'll eventually just screw it to the dash in the same spot so it's out of the way... |

well i will follow in brians footsteps here. just got some #8 3/4" wood screws. i think that will do the trick. if not i got some 1" ones in case i need to tap deeper. should be nice. |

Garrett, >so how long have you had the 176 and how have you liked it? I've had it for many months now and I love it. I am slowly creating a database of all the trails I am running. >do you know what size screws you were using? Honestly I can't remember the size screw I used for this. I imagine any flat head coarse thread screw will work...probably 6-32? I do remember I used a small pin to poke through the soft part of the dash until it bottomed out on the underlying plastic. This will tell you the depth of the foam and add another .25" to the screw length. You don't need/want to have too long a screw cuz I am not really sure what's under the plastic shell. Anyway, once you have used the base plate as a template to mark the hole locations, I used a sharp punch to create a dimple(though you can't see it). Then I used a small drill bit to make a pilot hole. I did this manually by hand(not power drill). Obviously use a bit that is smaller than the screw to be used. You might want to drop a thin nail or something down the pilot hole to check for any obstructions before final assembly. >also.....are you able to spin your gps to the right so the passenger can read/navigate? You know I can't remember, but I am pretty sure I can. It think I checked for that when I was doing the install. Good luck. Brian |

Oh BTW, I used slotted flat heads becuse that's what I had in my tool box. I think you'd be better off with FHP screws. |

yep. i have power leads under the driver seat for the CB. so i will just use those. any suggestions for running the power cord down behind the dash. rob mentioned maybe using the vent right behind the tray. for now i just have some high capacity metal hydrides. they will last a short while with the screen lit up. or for the meantime i was just going to run the wire down the front of the dash and towards the footwell and then along the console to my power source. |

I know im a little late to the party.. but I ran my wire down under the dash gauge pod and then down along the steering column. I also mounted it a little further back on the dash to provide full access to the very important rubber tray thingy..

even without the pic i think i know what you are talking about. that would work i think. i will have to take a gander at that. and Ho....unless you give my gps a good tug and rip the entire dash off you ain't gettin' my 176. i do see a little dash curling (new olympic sport) coming on, so maybe that is ok. ps: now i can see the pic for some reason. nevermind. *update* the pod idea will work. that thing is not really held on at all. the whole thing is pretty loose. now more so. thanks all!! |

Garrett - I ran my wiring like Gil - and dremmeled a little half-moon for the cable to fit through neatly. The hard part is feeding it down alongside the instrument cluster after the binnacle is off. Just a PIA job. BTW - Looks nice - I'm jealous - anyone wanna buy a Streetpilot..... Bill |
