does anyone sell a metal replacement or pressure relief cap for the stock POS nylon plug? I just recently had a coolant leak thru a defective plug, it cracked in the middle and coolant shot out the edge near the o-ring. Upon initial inspection I thought that somehow the threads had failed, but when i tried to remove the plug the head of the plug came off with no effort leaving the threaded portion stuck in the radiator. There was small hole in the center of the plug where coolant had shot out. I had to use a folding knife to remove the plug and I'm kinda weary of using another one in it's place. |

They are replacement items. Buy some spares at a $1.00 each or so and replace them each time you do your coolant. I went through this a couple months ago. I've got brass ones on there now, and I have a couple metal spares from the hardware store, but the plastic ones are fine if you don't leave them in there for 5-10 years. -P |

you know the tread pitch or anything perrone? alberts fell apart so he'd have to buy a bunch of sizes and guess. i always hear of this happening and it amazes me that people break these things. i always added fluid thru the resivour. is that an improper proceedure? sounds like als just failed on him without taunting it. is this the stadard morde of tailure? rd |

My failure happened the same way... I was opening the radiator to do a flush the morning of a trip out of town. The top sheared off in my hand with very little effort. And I am quite diligent about keeping up with regular maintenance. It had been no more than 4 months since I'd had it off before. As for the size, its quite easy. Its the same size and threading as the plug on the fill tower. I want to say 1/2" but I could be wrong. It's a common thread size for the diameter so nothing tricky there. I found an emergency replacment in at the hardware store in 2 minutes. -P |

If I am not mistaken there is a reason the fill plugs are plasitc. They were designed such that in the case of a massive cooling system pressurization failure the plugs would be the weak link and would blow out releasing the pressure. With metal plugs that won't happen and instead you will blow out the radiator core or worse. The original plugs are a cheap spare and were designed to be replaced every time you change your coolant. Left on for more than a few years they turn brittle and split apart when you try to remove them. |

Jason, The overflow tank and resivor cap are designed to relive excess pressure, LR was tring to save a few $$ and put the POS plastic plug in there. |

All covered at Ottos homesite, as it readily snapped for me as well: Any plumbing store can help you finding a cheap brass replacement - it's a 1/2" NPT threading on a 200/300tdi, and guess would be the same on a V8. Don't forget to get a rubber sealing ring as well. Shouldn't cost you more than what's mentioned above for the weak OEM plastic, and it won't let you down again. You'll find same brass item on an old Range Rover if OEM is your cup of tea. The 300tdi use 2 - two - plastic caps: One in same position on the radiator as on a 200tdi, and one on top of the thermostat; replace both of them with brass from plumbers store. Roverly Yours, Frode |

Careful!- NAS V8 radiator is NOT tapered pipe thread. It is a straight thread and the seal is made on the o-ring underneaththe head of the cap, not on the threads. Charles at Rover Accessories also has them Bill |

I don't see what the big deal is. I'm keeping my plastic plug where it is. Whenever I change the coolant (every year or two) I replace the plastic plug and O ring. Considering that it has to be taken off to do a proper flush, whats the problem? I mean, a car that has problems from axle to axle (not cheap stuff either) , and everyone's whining about a $3 plastic plug? How hard is that? Big deal, I keep a couple in the rear door tray. By the way, mine also had the head shear off. It was the original (5 years old)and the original owner never flushed the coolant. |

Yep, and to save you all the grief dont bother with a 1/2 NPT it will damage the threads. Get the replacement Brass ones I have a bunch, I dont care if you get them from me or not. But it will seal it will not melt and it will not damage the thread boss on the radiator. |

Rob hit the nail on the head, it's not the cost that's a factor, just trying to make the beast more reliable. The plug I had was about a year old, it was one I bought from the dealer when i flushed the system last year. I often drive out of state to visit friends and carry my tools, extra fluids, and some spares all the time. The cooling system has been a real PITA and I've had to fix it on the side of the road 3 times this year. Luckily every time has been close to home. |
