I have a 1995 Disco. I am replacing my front wheel bearings tomorrow. I have never done this job before, but I have a friend who is a very good professional mechanic who is going to help me, so I should be fine. However, I want to check to see if there are any rover-specific isuues I should be aware of as my friend does not have a lot of rover experience.

Questions:

1) We have ordered some Beck-Arnley bearings through Napa, more of a time rather than cost consideration. They will be in tomorrow. My concern: anyone ever use these? Napa guy says they show up as suitable for my Disco. They are only $14 each, which is fine with me if they are good bearings. My friend says they are probably better than the genuines. Any comments?

2) My DS front wheel is covered with grease/oil on the inside. All over the swivel ball and rim. My friend says that replacing the inner and outer hub seals and bearings will probably clear this up. At any rate he says give it a try before going to the extra effort of replacing the swivel ball seals, which he says is a much bigger job. Any comments or experience on this point?

3) My friend says that I can just use gear oil in the hub, but I was under the impression that I had to use axle grease?

4) Any rover-specific concerns or things to do/watch out for?

Marc,

I have done this many times. After you replace the inner and outer hub seals you "should" get rid of all that crap on the wheels. As far as the bearings, they should do fine. There is no need to spend $30 per bearing on genuine ones when the others will work fine. You can put 90w oil in the swivels, it doesn't really matter. My advice to you is to check all your bearings in all wheels. If one is going bad the others can't be too far behind. And remember to use plenty of grease and I mean plenty. It is going to be a sloppy job, but relatively easy. Good Luck!

Since you are pulling all of that apart, go ahead and replace the swivel seals. One shot grease can be used in place of the gear oil, but if you play in water it is not a good thing to have grease in there as you wouldn't be able to drain it after fording the rivers. Just my .02

Ok, thanks for ther help guys,
after doing a little reading, I have a new question:

5) My Haynes manual describes the procedure to set the "end-float" when re-assembling the hub. How important is this? I ask because every time I have seen anyone re-assemble a hub, they have never bothered to do so. Is it important, or just one of those things they tell you to do in books, but no one does in real life? Sorry if this makes me sound like a moron, but I want to get it done right.

When you take off the hub locking nut behind the locking washer, you'll see some spacer or shim washers behind it. These are the items that set the end float. Just make sure you put them back and you should be alright. If your friend has a a dial guage, you can check the end float to be sure.

You might think about picking up a shop manual for your truck, well worth the price if you intend to do your own work.

gear oil is fine, I actually prefer 85-140wt for the swivels. BTW did you buy the hub nut tool yet?
25-30 bucks if you don't have it yet. It's a 52mm i think, same one for all years of rovers.
