Greetings all,
I've been directed here from the porsche board;looks like a great site.
My question: How reliable is the 99 Disco seriesII?
A relative of mine is considering a 99 II with 54,000 miles for 23K, but doesn't really know much about them (nor do I as well).
Any outstanding problems/issues with the car?
Any updates that need to be performed?
My cousin will probably have all need work done at a dealer;how is the dealer network?

Thanks in advance!
Paul

Make sure it has an extended warrenty. Check the service records. These are high maintenance vehicles. The price is about right for retail... according to blue book. I just looked mine up and it is a 99DII, loaded with 24,000 miles, and the retail is 26k, but the dealer trade is only 22k. (I purchased mine when my lease was up for about 21k)

My LR has never left me stranded, (ok, once with a dead battery) but it has been in the shop for recalls and minor tweaks more often than my 86 Alpha Romeo spyder. Dealer service here in Los Angeles has not been the most customer friendly... no loaners, and they gripe about giving me a ride to work.. forget to wash the vehicle, etc.

Don't get one unless you either don't mind or enjoy fixing stupid shit yourself. If your relative doesn't fit into this category but still wants a disco I would sugest telling him to go for a newer one. I can't really speak for the DII as I own a 98 DI, but word is those D2's are even more of a pain to work on than the d1's. Like Joey said, these are high maintenance trucks and if you take it to the dealer everytime a light or something similar stops working then you will probablly spend a small fortune.

No loaner. That really bites. It would certainly suck if you had to go to one of the valley dealers just to get a loaner. Thanks for the info.

joey,

I am coming up to the end of the road with my 99 D2. Just curious what was your original buyout amount versus what you paid (21k correct) ? Thanks.

Look, the bottom line is: what are you gonna do with the truck? These trucks need attention on a weekly basis if you run them hard. If not, well, it's a Rover, so there will be the nickpick shit to test you. I have a 99 D2 and it's a fantastic vehicle but you gotta enjoy crawling underneath it every week or so. It's not a Civic.

The new D2's come with the service guarentee that gives you a rental everytime you bring it in for service. The good thing, for those of us who prefer to be in the truck rather than under it, is that almost every bit of service has been covered under the warranty.

My D2 was 39k when I leased it at 550 month with nothing down and my first payment paid. My buy out was 24k and change, but I paid nearly 22k when you count having to pay the taxes you avoid buy leasing.

I only bought the car cause I figured my miles are so low and the warrenty is still good. It will be gone when the warrenty is up, unless of course I get the extended warrenty for another $1200... but I have a year to think about it.

Buy one with waranty left and a good service record. A lot of the "good deal" disco IIs are complete pieces of crap. Listen for any ticking. If they miss an oil change you mine as well figure on replacing rockers, check for coolent leaks (rad is a POS), and make sure no lights are on the dash.

What are the typical repairs that occur on a weekly basis? I too am looking to buy a II in the near future. What about more infrequent typical problems?
