I am planning a trip to Hatteras next month and am thinking about what kind of prep and gear I should take for beach driving with a Disco 1. The subject of tire pressure has been ,ahem, throughly reviewed here already. I guess if I get really stuck, I will be burying spare and using the highlift. The goal is not to get really stuck! Are carpet strips valuable? And how buried will that get you out of? I have front plinth completely removed, if I put the high lift directly under the where the frame horn/crush can attaches to the bumper what do you think the carnage would be? If anyone has first hand experience on the Outer Banks and would like to lend a condition report I would appreciate it. Eric |

I go to the outer banks pretty often, and have never had any problems with getting stuck - even when I was all stock. Are you going to Oregon Inlet or are you going to Corolla? If you are going to Oregon Inlet, the only part that can be a challenge is the entrance/exit. Just keep your speed up a little bit and you will be fine. If by some chance you do get stuck, there is always someone around that will be more than happy to pull you out just to test out their own truck. |

my friends dragged me out to drive there when i first got the disco 3 or 4 years ago. it's boring, i know a lot of people go there but there's nothing too it. best bet is to drive out there when there's some moisture in the sand, if it's like powder out there you'll probably get stuck regardless of tire pressure. bring a shovel maybe a plank of wood or two? i drove out there the a day after it rained, full tire pressure no problems. careful on how you use that hi lift, it can do a whole lot of damage to a disco if not used carefully. |

should you get hopelessly stuck near Corolla, this thing is sitting at Duck, ready to lift your Disco from the surf zone and carry over to the road - http://www.frf.usace.army.mil/pics/fklft.gif they also have an F350 all set up for beach recoveries peter |

I am spending the week surf fishing. The best deal I have found so far is a cottage for 375 a week in Ocracoke. I think I would rather be in the Hatteras/Buxton/Avon area. I'll be sure to get a pic for the gallery with surf rods on the bumper and all. I want to be able to range pretty far along the beach. I don't think you can drive the beach at night until Oct. but if I can I would like to able to fish at night. Which is my biggest concern for self recovery. At least if I am out at night it will be high tide already. Rovers make poor boats. Eric |

OBX!! Just did the beach at corolla and Oregon Inlet a month ago on vaca. Been going since 1969 (3 years old). I agree with all above, Oregon Inlet is quite soft and as I am completely stock, I heated her a little struggling through it. Corolla up to VA is a great ride and much more open beach for those beginners out there, do that one FIRST! Sorry I have little to offer on conditions south, on Hatteras. |

I was at Cape Hatteras with some friends (girlfriend, her sister, puppies-Lucy & Dala) the weekend of July 19-21, 2002. I own a 02 Discovery Kalahari. I can't remember the access trail number I took (little north of Avon) but the sand was very deep. I was able to get to the beach and backed my Disco along the shore. Getting in was not a problem but getting out was an adventure. The sand was very very deep. When I was trying to get out I dug myself into a hole (wheels spinning-I wish I had taken a picture!) I lowered my air pressure to the recommended 20-psi and my Disco just pulled itself out with no problem. On the way out a guy with a 2002 Avalanche (?) got himself stuck on the way in. He got out and started to lower his tire pressure. You should be OK in stock form, just lower your tire pressure to the recommended 20psi. Have Fun! |

Watch out for the little chevy S10 trucks that the power company uses to get up the beach from Corolla..... because they came flying by when I was there.... seems they practice that "momentum" theory to the max. And.... if you're stuck ( which we weren't... it was a "pee-break") and they go by or stop and help you.... you should be very ashamed ! We used to blue crab gather (using chicken necks or a string) on the beach south of Whale Bone Junction and had absolutely no problem on the beach and didn't "air down" at all .... and all we had then was a `90 Mitsibishi Montero loaded with 5-6 people, crab nets, rotting chicken necks, lots of beer on ice..... .... haven't tried it yet with the Discos. OBX should be teeming with false albacore, so make sure you have lots of silver metal lures or flashy flies and plenty of line on the reels... I'm patiently waiting in my 94 Disco for their arrival here on Cape Cod! Fly rods are ready and 15 psi in the tires! As already said Oregon inlet is (or can be) soft and I've pulled an Blazer/S10 from there that was axle deep and still spinning the tires. Asside from airing down be sure to put it in low. I've seen people overheat while driving up the beach in high range. As for Corolla its generally okay. I've even seen a MB S500 driving up there. When in the soft stuff stay off the brakes. Just let the vehicle roll to a stop. If the sand is dry it will be like driving in snow. |

Depends on the tire size you're running. With 265/75x16's I run 15-18 depending on how much gear I have in the vehicle. |
