My 97 D1 is starting to leak like a girl on the rag. Who makes the best replacement seal for a Valve Cover Gasket & Rear Main Engine Seal? Also is this something a novice can replace on my own?

Rear main is a bitch of a job (#3 on mine - now I just add oil) - if you consider dropping the exhaust, the tranny, and the oil pan fair game - then you can do a rear main. If not, just add oil.

Rocker cover gaskets are easy to do, just a pain to get to. Lots of stuff like the top of the intake to remove.

I think I'll continue like Bills been doing and adding more oil ;) Are there any replacement gaskets better and more durable then the factory ones? The dealer wants a ton of $$ to fix this which I'd rather spend on a a suspension upgrade. I'm manily worried if htye are leaking water might be getting in when I play in the mud.

Use the newer valve cover gasket, it is rubber and has brass inserts for the screw holes

Dean

Does the idea of a better alternative disgust your sensibilities. Why the Oh brother, the old cork one was superceded by newer rubber one. I have seen some cheeper ones with out the brass insert and it sill compress too much when installed

No I was talking about the title of the thread - I mean this is kind of a family site right?
