The tach on my '94 Disco is tweaking all over the place. In the old days I would look at the cable but I'm sure technology has replaced tach cables with something infinitely more complex. Does anyone know where I should begin? Also - my sun visor has become, shall I say, "flacid". Any fix for that? Viagra? |

Tach: might be your alt on it's way out |

Check the routing on your belt.... if the belt's not routed right, the alt isn't performing well, which will result in a flighty tach-needle.... -L |

Wouldn't have thought about the alternator. I replaced the belt about a year ago, no problem til now so I'm pretty sure routing is fine. -Will throw a voltmeter on the alternator. Are they really $400? |

Jim, It's very easy to mis-route the belt such that it'll still work, but, as it slackens up, it then won't provide enough grip..... Here:
Check your routing. IF it is okay, then proceed with testing the alternator. FWIW, it's a fairly simple one to rebuild, should be easy for a decent auto-electric shop, etc. Good luck, -L |

The tach runs directly off the alternator. Separate small lead on back. Check connection first, but if the tach is wacky, and it's not a belt routing problem (?) it's the alternator. |

I will admit that I put the belt on wrong and it caused the Tach problem approx. 1 to 2 months later. I have replaced my belt before so this time I knew how to do it. I of course wouldn't question my own work until it really started giving problems. A friend asked if I had the belt on right and I said that it only can go on one way. That being said, we went to try and figure out what was wrong and as soon I removed the radiator cover he started to chuckle. Sometimes it o.k. to recheck your own work. Rico |

I would never let my pride dissuade me from taking good advice (especially when it's free). I'll check the routing on that belt first. Thanks. (This is a good board.) |

Rico, let me guess who chuckled at your expense. Anyway, cost of ego can sometimes be cheaper than cost of alternator. |

Bruce: You would chuckle too if your friend had just spent 5 minutes telling you that there is no way to put the belt on backwards. Thanks, Mike B. |

Trust me there is a way to put in on backwards. My tach did the very same thing... 97 Disco |

The tach on my '95 did the same thing when the voltage regulator (little module attached to the alternator) went out. Regardless of what the stealership will try to tell you, Land Rover (Magneti Marelli) alternators ARE rebuildable for a lot less than $400-plus for a new one. Parts are available from RAM Electric. ---Norm |

My 95 disco had the same thing going, a couple of days ago, it was confirmed that it was the alternator when I was left with a dead battery. I put a magneti marelli rebuild ~$205 in connecticut, so far so good. One note my rebuild was labeled as a 94-98 disco. The pulley attached was the smaller one which is on the 96-98 disco. I swapped them and all is well (so far.)Also, with the alternator being bad , I was not seeing the battery light on the instrument clusterupon startup. Good luck. |

Check your brushes, I had alsorts of quotes and in the end all that was wrong was that the brush had worn down and finally broke the wire connecting it to the voltage regulator. Had to file down the brushes, 10 minutes....The alt strips down very easily, 20 minutes. |
