Will be changing trans fluid in 96 D1 just wondering what fluid to use.Manual says Dexron IID,is this the same as Dexron III?Also what brand is preffered. Was going to get it done with machine to get all fluid out but this proceess(at pep boys)involves running a flush chemical thru, really do not want to put solvents in the trans so I guess I will do it myself.Any tips on getting it all out or should I drain fill run and drain again to get old fluid out of converter? Thanks |

About 5.5 quarts will drain, no practical way to get it out of the converter, so two drain-and-fills is about 75% new fluid, which is what most of the folks here recommend, and is better than a plain drain from a shop. Dexron III has replaced Dexron II. Lots of believers in synthetic ATF on the board, but I use Pennzoil or Chevron (whoever's on sale at the time), and change about every 15,000 miles. |

I got all worried and ambitious and changed my transmission filter after 60,000 miles for the first time. The thing looked absolutely brand new!! What a pain in the ass to get it out, and it was for nothing!!! Keep your fluids clean and you'll have no worries. Maybe put a bottle of conditioner in it once ina blue moon to keep everything nice inside. |
