Ok, mind out of the gutter. After three days of penetrating oil and torches I've determined that my shock mounting nuts (all eight!) are very effectively siezed. I was beginning to think I would not be getting my Disco back on the road in time for next weekend's trail ride. Than, a glimmer of hope.

While chatting w/ my dad this evening and telling him of my woes, he asked me if I had a nut-splitter. Well, when he discribed it to me I felt like the clouds had opened up and the sun was shining in. Apparently this ingenious little tool, which has remained unknown to me all these years, should be able to cut these rusted blocks of metal right off the bolt. Of course, this means I'm going to need to replace them. This brings me to my question:

I know the shock mount bolts use a 19mm wrench. What about the inner dimension & thread? Are they pretty standard or is there the almost-inevitable Roverism that makes it a PIA to find? I've been able to locate a lot of replacement hardware like this at my local Sears, and I really hope this is no exception.

The same question goes for the eight little nuts that hold the shock tower mounting plates in place. I'm having to order two new plates (see previous thread on OME install) and I do not believe it comes with the nuts.

advTHANKSance!!!!

Nope,

Nothing special. I don't have a standard shock handy to tell you what it is, but a 19mm nut usually fits about a 13 or 14 mm bolt. Threading should be common fine for that metric, but since I don't have one, I can't give you the pitch.

19mm nut metric goes onto 12mm bolt I think.

Somehow I remembered the nut adding 5mm, but perhaps that was on the 14mm size and not the 19mm.

Thanks for the correction. Been a while since I've needed to wrench!

Without checking my notes, I believe they are 10X1.5. Buy a tap while you're at it as you will certainly want to chase any threads that are so bad you're needing a nut splitter.

The shock tower mounting bolts are a tiny 8 m/m.

Also, something to think about, if you're shocks are so bad that they require such heroic efforts, don't you think they might need to be replaced?

Hi, Paul. Trying to install new OME shocks and HD springs is the reason I've discovered this bit of joy.

Could you give me a quick nutshell view of what the "tap" you mentioned does? Can these be found at my local Sears or are they specialty items? Also, any guess how much one might cost? I know I was taking a chance that after cutting off the rusted nuts I would be able to attack it with a heavy wire brush and some PB Blaster to clean the threads as needed. It sounds like you have another option.
