My 4 year old stock bat is starting to leak at the terminals. I have never needed to run the winch with motor off but was thinking of a single Optima yellow top now and adding second yellow top later like at incomtax time. Will the one single yellow top start the disco in winter weather? 550 cranking amps doesn't seem like much. Is anyone running single bat with winch? Will the stock alt be able to charge two yellow tops? I know, a lot of qustions, but at nearly $200 each, I don't want to find out I would have been better off with a $75 Sears Diehard. Facts: 1999 D1 Ramsey 12K one pair 100 watt ligths for now. By the way, is EE's BBS down? |

I am running a Warn 9K, two Hella 4K's and 4 El Cheapo's on the roof rack on the stock alternator and 1 yellow top. The alternator got hot enough to cook on once winching about a 6 months ago, but everythings still good |

Same here. I run a Warn M12k, two Hella 4k's, and 4 Hella 500 up top + 2 cheapo backup lights in the rear off my stock alternator and a Yellow top. Has been running fine for a couple of years now. Starts fine during the occasional NJ snow storm, too. |

Does anyone use the other Optima Battery's, like the blue top or red top for these high load applications? Just wondering...... Paul |

Just wondering if any of you running the yellow top have really needed the deep cycle. I have never drained the stock bat yet because the motors running when winching. Just trying to justify the deep cycle over the higher cold cranking amps of the red top. If the yellow top starts Axel's truck in NJ winter, I'm sure it will be fine in NC winter. Thank's for the responce. Gabe |

The new Yellow Top has lower CCA rating than the older ones. You could look into Odyssey or Exide Orbital. Exide Orbital is same technology as Optima. It is rated at 750CCA and more reserve capacity than the Optima and is cheaper. The deep cycle version has a light blue top. Check out http://www.exide.com/products/trans/productdetail/orbital_deep_cycle.html |

Gabriel, I too have been winching with the stock battery, and never drained it once. Perhaps a deep cycle battery on my DSII is irrelevant since the alternator is more than respectable at 130Amps. Using a deep cycle battery as simply a starter battery the majority of the time will most likely damage the life/capacity of the battery because it was designed(i.e. needs to be)completely drained before recharging. Buying a deep cycle battery(s) is like buying mud-terrain tires...If you have to ask if you need them, you probably don't. As far as my Rover upgrades go, I try to base my decisions on function over image. When the time comes, an Orbital Exide "red" will do fine for me. -Barry |

I have two Red tops on two other (not my D1) 4x4s. Had them for around 2-3 years. Real happy with them. Dont have much extra equipment, but run them in real hot and real cold without an issue. |

I've run a red top optima for about 3 years the last two with winch. No reason for dissatisfaction, still with original alternator (117k) |
