Folks:

My mechanic is advising me to replace the head gasket on my 97 Disco. The cost he estimates is between $1400 - $2400. Is this reasonable? If not, could someone tell me what I should expect and also what the replacement actually entails (hours of labor, etc). Thanks in advance.

I had to replace 1 head gasket also. The mechanic charged me $600 plus parts (around $150). This also included the nessesary oil change and coolant flush.

Fareed, The 500 to 750 price is about average for RR a set of heads, Where are you located? What is the labor rate your shop is charging, here in San Diego the shop labor rates vary from 65 to 95 some places a bit more. How many hours is your shop quoting? I think the manual call's out 12.5 hrs to RR the heads

The price you quoted does that include rebuilding the heads? On a 97 if your pulling the heads i would rebuild them a the same time.

Dee/Brent - Thanks.

Is it absolutely necessary to rebuild the heads? His charge includes the rebuilding. Thanks, again.

Fareed,
Yes, rebuild the heads if they are coming off anyway to replace the gaskets. The cost is minimal compaired to the labor to remove the heads.

If its in the budget rebuild them, Chances are they will need it, the late 90s Disco have POS valve guides in them. They are prone to sticking, and chances are if you pull the heads and dont rebuild you will end up with a stuck valve before the check clears. Also it will cost more but use new bolts and a composite gasket
