97, D1. I was trying to clean some unknown sticky substance out of the cupholder and yanked it out. Now, I cannot get it back in. It appears that I lost a tiny gear on the left track. How can I get this thing back in. I iamgine some daylight would help to see the problem. Should I cover the hole with duct tape? Is this fixable?

IF it's like my 95 its a 50$ part from BritishAtlantic. 4 screws hold it in although its bigger than you'd think. About a 10 minute job.

My 5 year old yanked mine out a few months ago and I wrestled with it for a while and finally I just slid it back in without the gears and it works just fine without them, just doesn't slowly slide out like before when you push it in, I also left the spring out so now I just pull it out manually and it's fine.

I could have made it work but some of the teeth on my gears broke off so it would get misaligned each time you moved it in and out.

With daylight on my side, I got it back in minus one gear. It seems to work fine though it takes a few pushes to get it to stay in. I was trying to avoid the $50 part issue. I had to tell my wife that it is simply not safe to drink and drive.
