Has anyone cut back their exaust pipe so far as to remove the resonator? What are the results: loudness etc. Also, what is the legality of doing this?

I cut my resonator off 2 years ago. It was barely noticiable in terms of noise. As far as legality, I believe noise is covered under city or county ordinance. Quite a few others have cut the resonators off their trucks as well.

I put flow-masters on without the resinators

perrone

did you cut it off (resonator) and then add a new piece of pipe to extend the exhaust out a little further, so it does not look so obvious to the garage?

I did the same. My resonator was just about completely dead when I replaced it. I think that if you keep the original muffler and replace the resonator with a pipe, the only difference that you'll find is a resonance at about 2500 rpm. I added a different muffler that supposedly eliminates the resonance by itself.

From a legality and safety perspective, it is necessary to extend the exhaust out to the rear bumper. In Indiana, it is unlawful to have the exhaust exit anywhere other than behind the vehicle (not beneath the vehicle, or in front of the rear tires).

Politicians should have to get REAL jobs. Oops, I'm on the ballot again in May.

actually i am talking about the muffler. just hacking it off. then extending it out, but keeping it pretty snug up high. but adding that extra lenght to make it look more like stock to get it to pass inspection. if it looks fine they are happy around here.

I extended mine past the bumper for my own safety. The hell with what the politicians say.

Erik, you should inquire locally at an emissions station or the local boys in blue. I really doubt there are legal concerns and the extra noise is not likely to wake the neighbours.

Ive got the replacement Borla muffler (( not the cat back kit one)) and a straight pipe all the way back. its a bit louder but it scares off the baby jeeps

Thanks guys, the idea, of course is to not dig the poor exaust pipe into the ground reversing into a hole anymore. I'll check to see if I need to extend the pipe past the rear bumper to be legal, and if so, I'll protect it somehow, otherwise, I'd like to just hack it off right after the last down-turn.

past the rear bumper or not legal? no way. what would happen to the millions of ford and chevy trucks that are sold with the exhaust coming out behind the rear tire, way before the bumper.

Tom,

Trucks and cars/SUVS are handled differently...

With a truck, since the occupants are in a cab, then it's legal for the exhaust to exit in front of the rear wheel. With a car, SUV, anything with a back-seat, the exhaust has to exit behind the rear wheel to be legal.

Unless, of course, it's a Cobra or a Viper or a Corvetter with the side-pipes... maybe not legal but they look so good that they're not gonna stop ya for your exhaust, only for speeding....

ok, well just behind the rear wheel, then right. not behind the bumper. my tahoe has it behind the rear wheel.

Does it have to protrude from underneath the vehicle? For instance, the perfect place I can see for cutting it off, is right after it rounds over the rear axle. Can I just cut it there, (or somewhere nearby where it's still supported) or do I still need to extend it past the body?

The person who ran the pipe through the rear quarter panel was Greg Davis. Go to his photo gallery and check it out. I saw it at MAR 2001...looks and sounds very cool.

I cut my resonator off today with a hacksaw, and then got a 2.5 inch ID pipe that is 18 inches long for 4.99 from napa, and a 2.5 inch exhaust clamp for 1.29 and clamped the new pipe on right behind the rear exhaust hanger. Sounds a little louder, and a little deeper. Not a bad mod for $6.28, and only took maybe 15 minutes....

Crap Will,

I paid Merlin Muffler shop or whatever right there in Roswell by Bear Valley $25 to do the same thing. He welded a straight pipe in and I thought I got a great deal...
