I have a Disco II and while following a truck, received a crack in the windshield. The road is under construction & cannot believe all the rocks in the road. Any suggestions about price or should I contact the truck or construction company?

Did the rock bounce out of the truck, ie, was it hauling gravel for the road? If so, yes, I'd call them... even if they paint "stack back 100ft - not responsible for wiindshields", they still are responsible, if it came off of their truck.

But, if it was lying on the road, and the truck just kicked it up, then, no, you can't go after the truck... I doubt that the DOT working on the road would be much help, but, you can sure give it a try....

IMHO, FWIW....

Call truck company and they'll put you in touch with their insurance company. Be polite and persistent.

I'm on my third windshield in 4 years. The present windshield has a nice crack and star in it from construction rocks. Really getting sick of replacing these things.

How are you going to prove that the crack is from them?

Most trucking companies don't even bat and eye - that's why they have insurance. They just pass you along to their ins carrier and they're done. Call them- you have nothing to lose and probably will get a windshield.

right Bill.

you can sit here and ponder the who/what/where/when/how or you can pick up the phone...

I have full glass coverage on all vehicles so I just call my insurance company and the next day someone is at my office replacing my windshield, but I only get one replacement per year (and you'd think that would be enough). However, when a construction company clearly broke my wife's windshield with an unsecured load (lazy employee), I called them on it. If someone threw a rock out their car window and broke your windshield, would you just say "damn, that's gonna cost me..."?

Now if you lived in sunny Florida, your insurance carrier will replace the windshield for free, no questions or hesitations and to make it easier, any glass shop is happy to replace on the spot, just sign a form and you are out of there.
I think it has to do with the volume of truckers hauling gravel/phosphate in the state.

No, Blue, if someone threw a rock out of their car window, I'd chase 'em down and take it out of their ass right there.....

LOL. That's what the lady who answered the phone at this construction company basically said to me..."Your wife should have stopped the driver and confronted him about the incident." I told her that my very pregnant wife just wasn't comfortable forcing a big rig to the side of the highway in her little G20 and then climbing up to the driver's window to chew out the trucker. I was then transferred to their insurance carrier.

Good point!

:)

What's funny, Laura had a rock fly off of a dump-truck and crack the windshield on her Subaru... just before she was rear-ended and it was totalled... I was going to be calling the trucking company on Monday morning, and she was rear-ended on the Saturday before...

Ironic, eh?

My wife (the insurance adjuster) had a piece of steel fall from a truck of the local scrap yard and trash her windshield. When she called the company, they initially refused to have anything to do with her... Until she informed them she was filing a police report (where she knows many of the police officers because of her job) for an unsecured load and that the car belonged to an insurance company and that since she'd be out of a car for a few days while it was being replaced and her company would be more than pleased to send them a bill for the replacement windshield, her downtime, replacement vehicle rental, loss of wages, lost profits for the insurance company... You get the idea.

This same company has big signs on the back of their trucks that say they won't be responsible...

I'm embarrassed to say that in far too many cases, they really do expect you to back down.

It was great fun listening to her on the telephone arguing with the dispatcher who quickly gave her the name of the insurance carrier for the scrap yard.

Well, I replaced the windshield on my '95 D1 without insurance coverage and it cost me about $250 if I remember correctly. If you lack comprehensive coverage like me, find the right shop and you should be able to get one for around that, unless there is a major difference with the D2.

I just replaced mine today. I had my 02 disco for two months and a rock on the highway made an 8 inch crack. With a $500 deductable on comprehensive it cost me $418 and 4 hours to get it replaced. - There goes my damn rack money.

Don't forget also, that all lights, mirrors etc count as glass and covered for breakage under comprehensive coverage.
