I was replacing my front ABS sensor and the manual said to remove the sensor, then remove the two bolts next to the sensor hole to remove the sensor bushing. I removed the first and then as I was removing the second (the one closest to the brake shield) I noticed a puddle of swivel ball oil on the ground and my swivel ball leaking! I couldnt tell where the hell it was coming from. I tightened the bolts back up and it stopped leaking. I then took some gear oil and poured it into the sensor hole to replenish what spilled out (was I correct for doing so?). To hell with the new bushing, I used the old one. The sensor went in fine and so far, I'm good. But why did my swivel leak like that?

When you removed the upper swivel pin PIVOT mounting bolts, you allowed clearance between the swivel ball and the big seal. No big deal, you just moved the to-be-sealed surface away from the seal. Refitting it put it back into position. As far as gear oil, that housing was originally filled with cv joint grease, but if you are going off road with water crossings, oil drains better than grease anyway. IF you are reluctant to try this again, you could remove the sensor and 'adjust' the tangs that locate the sensor to provide more tension.

Trevor,

May I ask how you adjust the tangs?
