After spending some hard earned $$ and spilling a little blood on the installation, I finally got my 97 D1 looking a little better by installing a OME HD lift, ARB front bumper and TJM rear bumper.
The other day I got to noticing that all the other vehicles on the road have side lights and that my new bumpers didn't have a place for the stock ones. I just folded the wires back up in to the body to keep them out of the way.
I got curious and asked the local gendarme if it was a requirement for inspection here in VA. Of course it is. So now I have my inspection due next month and I've got to figure out a way to make a bracket for the stock sidelights. Has anyone done this before?
I guess I could carve out a space in the rubber part of the TJM, but I'm hesitant to cut in to the ARB. Any thoughts, comments?

Hey Justin, it's Robbie. Honestly man, I would just take it in to get inspected and see what they say. You get a good garage, read guy who doesn't care, and they may just go ahead and pass you. If they don't, then worry about hooking something up.

Wouldn't the side marker lights (behind the wheel well) suffice?

Excuse the stupid question, what's the inspection all about? I always hear about them but have never bother to ask the intent.

Why, how often, etc.?

Can someone enlighten this left coaster?

In Virginia, you have to have an annual safety inspection. They examine the tread on the tires, the brakes, all of the lights, the gas cap, the emmissions components, etc. In rural spots, they don't test the emmissions, but in bigger cities, they do. Signals have to work, no light-bulbs burned out, no rusty floorboards that let your feet fall through, no bald tires, etc. etc. If it passes, then they put a sticker showing the month and year that your inspection expires next.

Robbie, et al- Thanks for the ideas. Actually it was suggested that I take it to get inspected at a shop where I know someone or where they don't speak much English. Hopefully that'll work.
I thought about the side marker lights but they don't illuminate when the parking lights do. According to the Code of Virginia, you must have amber lights at the front of the vehicle and red lights at the rear that illuminate to the side of the vehicle. Presumably to mark the vehicle if it approaches from a side street.
In the parking lights mode, the only thing that illuminates now is the front headlamps (the lower wattage 5W bulb) and all of the rear red tail lights.
If I come up with a neat modification, I'll post it.

I was going to just mount them in the fender above where they were on the end caps. It looks like you can just drill some holes and cut out enough to fit the bulb and wiring through. Then get some nuts and bolts and attach it. I'm planning on doing it this weekend if weather permits. If I think about it I'll take some pictures and post them.

Mabey (just for inspection purposes) glue a heavy magnet to the light and put it on the car in the appropriate place tuck the wires out of the way and call it good. It might work.

Check out the East Coast Rover Discotech project. They installed Defender two filiment bulbs so the trun signals light up with your headlights and then flash brighter for the signal. Mike said it was really simple and even that he could supply a kit for anyone interested. Check out their website www.eastcoastrover.com

On the inspection thing...

In North Carolina, inspections are performed by the Gestapo. After two seperate 'oops' incidences, both of my front turn signals had cracks in them (one had a small hole). They eventually filled up with water above the light bulb and I left them that way for several months. After weighing whether or not goldfish in my turn signals would be funny enough to merit buying a new light socket eventually, I drilled some drain holes in the plastic. When I took my rig in for it's anal... er... annual inspection she failed. Why? Because my turn signals were cracked and they might fill with water. Apparently my drain holes weren't enough. $165 later I have two new turn signals, which will no doubt get busted by the end of the year.

Kyle, I told you that I would let you know when I got it cause I'm giving you my stock brush bar. I'm just getting ready so that when John does finish it I can just put it on and be done with it. Plus, now that my springs are worked in my tires are catching my bumper end caps on sudden fast dips so I'm probably going to pull them off which means I have to move the light anyways. shesh.. Man, you were the kid that woke up at 3am Xmass morning and was shaking presents under the tree weren't you? :) Hey while I'm thinking about it you want my old stock non-roto flex rear drive shaft? You would only need the flange to get rid of the roto on Heather's Disco.. I think I remember her having one. Seeing as I can use the GBR ones as spares now I don't need the factory ones I've been holding onto. Let me know.
