I have a 99 Disco II and I am getting ready to replace the brake pads, but I noticed that the rotos are quite worn out. is this normal at 52K miles? I believe one should replace them every 40K miles in average but I am not sure on that. I bought the disco in early 2000 and I have not had replace the pads yet so perhaps that is part of the problem. I do some off-roading every now and then, but not too extreme! should I buy aftermarket parts from one of the rover sites or can i get these parts at a local parts store? this will be my weekend project!! thanks Jorge |

Jorge, That is a loaded question. There are many D2 folks out there who have delt with premature rotor wear and / or pad wear. Are you running stock tires and suspension or did you lift the vehicle? Bigger tires and lift equate to quicker pad and possible rotor wear. This weekend I am changing out all the pads and inspecting the rotors at the same time. I am at 28K on the ODO and if I need new rotors, then Mr. Dealer is getting a warranty call. As far as what type to order, well that is open to opinion. I just ordered a standard set from www.discountrovers.com. Another source is www.roverconnection.com. Paul '00 pig |

Thank you Paul! I am running on stock tires and suspension. so, if I am getting this right, the rotors should be part of the warranty? I believe I have an extended warranty until 62.5K miles. |

Well, I think that would depend on your ability to persuade your dealer. Since you are running stock, I would say something. If they deny you, well then you tried and you are now reaping the benefits of owning a Land Rover. Check out Nathan at Discount Rovers, he can hook you up. Paul '00 pig |

Jorge, The rotors on the D2 have 1 mm of useable thickness. My 99 D2, is the wifes grocery getter and leads the life of Reilly. At 30k miles the rear pads and rotors were shot (the fronts are not far behind). As far as pricing the parts...I looked here and there over the usual internet suspects...I ended up at thepartsbin.com (free shipping) for the rotors (Brembo)and at XK's unlimited for the pads (Lockheed). The only problem is that on the first go around they both sent the wrong stuff. They got it right the second time around. Paul, Good luck talking to your dealer...that is where I found out the info on the "from the factory" rotor thickness. I moaned, was shocked and appauled...the whole thing...was told that BMW and Mercedes are the same way and they had seen replacements on vehicles with less than 30k on them. |

Damn, that blows. Please post how those aftermarket parts worked for your brake system. I am very interested. Paul '00 pig |

Paul, Got about 5k on these aftermarket brakes. All is going well. I might even add that the nasty brake dust problem all over the nice wheels (that is a real bitch to keep clean) appears to be lessened. Not gone but definitely lessened. |

thanks guys! I will persuade the dealer since recently I had a problem that according to them, they never heard of it before...perhaps given a guilty concious for not knowing the problem, they might want to make up for it!! you never know! the problem was that one day I started the Disco, but I could not get out of parking. I got on the phone with my dealership back in Denver and they could not help me..so I struggled for an hour or so and found out that I had an electrical short with the brake lights. found the fuse, and everytime I replaced it, it would let me get out of parking but it would burn it again!! I took it to the local Jaguar dealership (El Paso TX) just to wait to be towed to Allbuquerque. they fixed it and last week it did it again! this time I replaced the fused and is working perfectly! my guess is it will happen again! the tricky part is that when this happened, the differential lock red light would come on every time I hit the brakes!! as far as I know, 99 Disco II should not have it since they do not have a differential lock!! is this correct? be aware!! No complains tough, I love my Disco!! I just want to learn more since I am going out of warranty, but that comes with the package when you want the best 4x4 and the most traveled vehicle on earth!! Todd, How Ironic, Discount Rovers just called me about a shipping issue and since my rear rotors are lined out, I ordered a set. 1 MM is nothing! I know that I exceed that amount in wear just by looking at it. Looks like more fun for Saturday. Paul '00 pig |

Paul, My head still spins when I think about it...however...a good cold beer on Saturday will help ease the pain. If I could make a recommendation here... a Stoudt's Scarlett Lady ESB goes well !!!! Enjoy your brake job...and remember it could be worse...at least the D2 pad/rotor set up is much easier to remove than the D1's. |

Jorge, Your 99 D2 does have a CDL. However, it cannot be accessed from the cabin (unless you install an after market kit). Have the dealer look at it...someone may have gotten underneath and monkied with it. |

Paul, is it possible that the CDL is causing the short on the brake lights? to me, they seem to be two separate items! again, I am learning as I go along! also, do you recommend installing the kit to access it(advantages/disadvantages)? Jorge |

Hey Jorge, As far as a CDL kit goes, yes I recommend installing one. I know four people, three of which got burned while engaging the CDL on my pig using a 10mm wrench. Why did they get burned? Well you see, if you engage the CDL with the vehicle off, you will disarm the ETC and if you turn off the vehicle with CDL engaged, the ETC will not activate. I am still researching this and haven't decided how I am going to go about it. But wrapping your arm through all of that hot metal is no fun. I have no idea why your CDL light came on when you hit the brakes. Very Weird. Just to rule out it out, I would climb under the truck and double check that the CDL nut is turned all the way counter clockwise. It took four different people to explain to me were it was, but it is on top of the transfer case, close to center. You can't see it, you have to feel it. Now as far as this fuse thing. Did LR Albequerque perform a Diagnostic? Paul '00 pig |

Paul, they found a short on a transmition switch, but I do not have the precise information. what it did is that when I hit the brakes the lights would not come on and somehow this switch would not allow me to get out of parking! very weird! I will try to find the CDL nut and perform your instructions. can you explain how the CDL helps you? the subject is relatively new to me! thanks Jorge |

Well Jorge, It's new to me as well. I tried it for the first time last weekend up at Killington. Imagine, with ETC, climbing a steep incline and all four wheels are spinning, stopping, and spinning causing the vehicle to jerk fore and aft and even yaw to the left and right. A lot of effort is taking place to go up. Now, with CDL locked, going up the same hill the vehicle will seem to power it's way up with a lot less effort. Like I said earlier, you can engage CDL with the vehicle running and maintain ETC. But the ETC will engage a lot less than before due to the power being directed to both wheels. It all depends on the trail and what you want to do. Honestly, I was having more fun with it unlocked up at Killington. With the CDL locked, I just drove up the hills without any effort. But....There are some serious trails out there that I have not been on yet that require you to be locked to get up. If that doesn't work, then it's winch time and I don't have a winch.L |

Jorge and Paul, Go to the "tech" section on this site for a look at and some discussion of CDL lever/system. Also, look at the www.disco2.com website in the "market" section to buy the whole smear for @125. Also, there is some things of interest in the "How to" section as well. Todd |
