I have a 96 Disco and am having problems with my ABS. It seems like every morning when I start driving my ABS kicks in when I try to stop. Sometimes it does not kick in that hard and all that I hear is a "whirring" noise and it feels like my pedal is tapping back at me. When this happens my stopping distance is increased a little bit. Then there are the other times when I could stand on my brake pedal and it seems like there is a brick below the pedal and my braking distance in increased dramatically!! My Anti Lock light comes on and off at its own free will. I have watched the light and it does not seem to be on everytime or off everytime either one of these instances happen.

I have read people talking about there sensors and was wondering if someone could tell me exactly what they do(I assume they probably recognize road conditions and thing like that), but maybe someone could explain it in more detail, and how I can check/change mine.

Any other help would be greatly appreciated. Also, would disabling my ABS be a wise idea.

Thanks
Mark

I had something extremely similar happen and it was a failed right front ABS sensor.

Anyone know if it is coold to turn off the ABS when off road? How to do this?

My light will NOT go off. I have pulled the front two sensors out and cleaned them. STILL ON.

HOWEVER, I noticed that one of the sensors had some scratched in grooves in it running around the sensor on one side, as if something was slightly grinding against it.

Anyone know what can cause those grooves/scratches??

An ABS light on could mean many things. Simply pulling and cleaning them might not do the trick. One thing to check, is the resistance of the sensor. Unplug them and compare the resistance of the other sensors. If it's infinite, you probably need to replace that sensore. Always start by tapping the sensor in, just in case it has drifted out. If you have a 95 or below model, you can diagnose the ABS through a blinking light.
As for the ABS activating by itself on a mildly rough surface, that can be a scary situation, as it increases your breaking distance. This happened to me twice, both times it was just before the sensor went bad and the light remained on constantly. I have currently replaced both my front sensors. The parts are about $200-$250 per sensor and they take about 30 min. to replace.

SOCAL JOE, the scratches are probably from the metal bushing which holds it in place. Thats not your problem.
