I just had my local shop put on an ARB bumper / winch on my 02 Discovery. Along with the bumper I puchased a Hi lift adapter with the assumption that it would make lifting the front easier and more importantly safer. It did'nt come with instructions and I'm burned out trying to find the answer on the net. I know you guy's can answer this simple question. Do I have to take the plastic "bumperettes" off the front of the bumper to use the adapter - furthermore it looks like they are bolted on and it would be a hassle to get them off. Simply put - how the hell is this thing supposed to work and what is the safest method of lifting the front by the ARB bumper. Thanks,

I know this may be a boring question but I just got off the phone with ARB and they told me that the adapter does not work with the DII bumper! I asked how I could use a hi lift jack on this bumper and he told me that I could'nt because of the crush cans. Could someone please tell me this isn't true! One of the reasons I got the bumper in the first place was to have a lift mount.
Any advise would really be appreciated. I'm used to working with Jeeps so I know this is an ignorant question.

Clem, that sounds about right, and you did hear it from the manufacturer.

Lifting off the bumper isn't the greatest idea to begin with. It leaves you exposed to tipping your rig over, unless done properly. Lifting from the side off of sliders are preferred.

Having said that, I have a DII with ARB. I've lifted the truck from the front in a pinch. But I would not do it again. It scares me...

Like Dave said it's not safe but it can be done. Then again it's not safe to use a Hi-Lift but with care it can be done. Heck, you can die using a winch too! I have an ARB on my '99 D2 and have used the front ARB bumper MANY times with a hi-lift with no problems. Make sure you use good hardware on the front end where it bolts to the frame. If mounted right it won't rotate. What good is a bull bar if you can't use it to jack the vehicle? What happens when that 9000lb winch tries to pull you up a hill? Be careful with the crush cans and it can be done. I generally use the two slots on either side of the roller fairlead on the bumper. As for the ARB jack adapter you do need to remove the bumperettes but it's a PITA and I have never used it even though I own one. Learn to use your equiptment on the driveway where you're under no stress and practice. Check out http://www.bb4wa.com/articles/hilift_jack.htm for information on using the hi-lift. As with any heavy tool you can get injured if you don't use it correctly. If you're worried about the crush cans you can weld them. I've had my ARB on my D2 since the first 12 entered the US and I've winched, jacked and had the weight of the vehicle slam on the bumper and have had very little shift with the crush cans. With that huge over hang you can't help but put the weight of the vehicle on it once in a while when climbing a rock or climbing a river bank.

Thanks guys, that confirms it. I've used a Hi lift for years with my Jeep. I had wilderness bumpers front and back and Tomken side bars. It was a snap to lift the vehicle from any side. The way I see it there isn't a safe way to use the jack at all on the Disco II unless you invest in a rear bumper or side bars. Amazing considering I see so many of them on this sight. I know it can be used as a hand winch but I've never needed to do that considering my winch has always worked for me. Thanks though for the information this sight is invaluable to people such as myself that are relatively new to Land Rovers.
