OK, I just replaced the front wheel bearings on my 95 Discovery. Everything went fine except the replacement lock washer that I ordered (the one that fits between the 2 hub nuts) has arrived and it is the wrong one. Apparently they switched washer types between 96-97 model years. Mine was about 1mm thick and folded a lip over each washer (FTC3179). The ones I recieved in the mail are indicated in my shop manual for years 1997 and on (FTC5241). The ones I recieved are about 3mm thick and a good bit larger diameter. They are way too thick to bend over the hub nuts. My question is: given that nothing else in the hub changed between these model years, why not just use these thicker washers? Will it really matter if I dont bend them over? Is one design superior to the other, if so, why? The vendor has shipped me the correct part, but I am tempted to use the newer washer. Any comments? Thanks |

Lock washer has to be bent over otherwise hub nut and lock nut will work loose together. John D |

Just use the old one. It's still good. I've been re-using mine for 3 years. -P |

I re-use mine too... if your really good, you can re-use the seals. |

I generally re-use the seals as well, but I use the RTC-3511 double-lip seals (which are a PITA to reuse) and keep a couple spares on hand. -P |

I know you need to bend the old ones, and I understand why. What I want to know is why did they switch to the thicker washer and is their any advantage to it? I cannot imagine that it is meant to be bent - it is way too thick. |

Are you sure you got a new lockwasher and not a distance piece? Does this new washer have a tang on the inside that fits the groove on the spindle? You know, like the old one did? -P |

Perrone, it does have the tang - and I checked the part number (FTC5241) out in my LR parts book - it is indicated for years 1997 and on instead of the fold-over type washer (FTC3179 - indicated for pre-1997). I am not sure that it isn't meant to be bent over, but its thickness would seem to indicate that it is not. |

I've seen this on Warn hubs for other vehicles. They switched from washers with holes that went over a pin on the bearing nut to just a flat washer. These, however, are made of softer metal allowing the outer nut to bite into it so it does not come loose. These washers are of same diameter as the nuts so they can't be bend over. In your particular case I'd wait for few more replies before making up your mind. Sorry for not having a specific answer. |

What does the workshop manual say with respect to post-97 lockwashers? Does it say to bend it over, or does it say to merely torque to a given torque value? All this talk about bending over, it's a good thing this isn't the D-90 board, or Merv would be having a field day! P-fire up that disc (mine's at home, something about violating software policies) and let us know! Inquiring minds and all that! |

Rob, was yours bent over? Paul, I checked the manual, it says something along the ines of "install lock washer" - something very ambiguous - nothing about bending it over |

I agree with Rob. If we can't find out for sure, I'd assume that its diameter being larger than the nut's would suggest it should be bent over the nut. |
