I've put 45,000 miles on my truck and have yet to change the trans. fluid/filter? (92,000 total miles) Is it due for a change and if so can I trust the hillbillies at the local trans. shop to do it without screwing something up?

I think the filter is due every 30-40.000 miles. Parts prices are rather low. But you need to (re-)move (difficult to remove it completely, just rocking it away from the autobox can suffice) crossmember and the exhaust away from the autobox´s oil pan. Otherwise the pick-up tube inside the oil pan will prevent the oil pan to be removed.
You will learn many new curse-phrases from the people you pay to do it. But nothing scientific about. Torx-type sockets are needed for the filter screen. Many people don´t change this filter because you need 2hours to get to it and 5mins to change it.
Beware, even a used filter screen can look fine from inside but there probably some blockage by very small metal debris.

So it is definately worth changing. I heard of a RRC that was shifting softer afterwards and after unbolting the filter sreen there was another rush of oil pouring down that couldn´t flow through the screen; that RR has covered 100k km and probably hasn´t had a filter change. That´s what I meant by talking about a used screen. Take a new one.

I was going to do this job myself as well. I however called the dealer just to see what they charged to do it. I asked of a new filter and he said that it didn't need to be replaced because it is metal. If it never needs replacing why do they sell new filters? That is what I was wondering to myself. My rig has 115k and I can pretty much guarantee that the •••••• fluid has never been touched. I was going to do it this weekend but don't know if I want to fool with it myself. Any thoughts on that filter situation? Later.. RS

Good argument the one from your dealer. Usually they tend to tell you sky high sums they needto do the job - to make you go away and let them do nicer things.
(You can do it yourself, I have and would again. Point is you have to remove the middle/end exhaust section. Probably past its best on your rig so its falls apart if touched. And all the rust flakes find your eye. Then that outrigger.
Usually stuck, calles for a strong arm to move. It is not a difficult job, just an unpleasant one, that´s it. ). You need the filter screen, two o-rings and the oil-pan rubber gasket. Don´t use any other sealing stuff.

Regular changes are recommended by ZF.
Maybe you find details on their homepage (www.zf.com).

Did the transmission filter this week and its not too brutal. After fluid drain, nuts unbolted, lossen the exhaust center piece just enough for crossmember to swing towards the engine (leave one bolt on each side of the frame). Torx screw needed and be ready for fluid drips. Had to changed the filter cuz i have no idea how to clean the old filter and re-use it. Took me longer than 2 1/2 hours but its worth it.

Dutch,

I have a 99 Disco II which is about to go out of warranty. I am wondering if at 52K miles I need to replace the transmission fluid. the other day I was looking for the fluid reservoir to ckeck it but could not locate it! perhaps this is a silly question but I think is rather important! what fluid brand/type did you use?
