I have a bone stock rig now. My wife is a few months pregnant and is thinking she will have a hard time getting into the truck when she's much furhter along. She's only 5' tall. I have a pair of RoverTym Sliders ordered. For two reasons, protection, and hte 4" step they give. They are quite expansive, and not sure if i will keep them and install 'em.

Money just got a little short, and I'm not sure if i want to spend the money for them. I might sell them, and get some dreaded running boards. How hard are they to take off when I going off roading with the rig. Or I'd like to see if there are any kind of steps out there that do not look to bad, and do not cause such a loss of ground clearance.

Or finally, would any of you great fabricators out there make a custom step that looks nice, and works. Or am i better off putting on hte sliders.

Sorry for the long post, and advise would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem a couple years ago. Instead of running boards, you might want to get a small temporary step stool to keep handy, like a lightweight injected-resin stool made for little kids. Then you'll have it for the little tike after he/she's born :)

and don't even think about trying to get your very pregnant wife in the back door. If you do get her in, you'll never get her out.

Zak,

Keep those RT sliders. Man, those things are rock solid when installed. Runnings Boards or steps are weaker in contruction and will bend or tweak when stepped on. When I throw my 250 lbs on the RT's there is no movement.

Keep the RT's. You will be sorry if you get rid of them.

Really, a little yellow step stool, wow!!!!

I'm around 250 as well, so I NEED something stable.

I'm just not sure if i want to spend hte $600 on them, or dare I say it, get a roof rack. Oh no, now's going to get trashed........ I should be safe if i stay with a D1 rack on a D1......

Stools a good idea. Although it won't help when she's using the truck by herself......

Maybe incorporate the folding steps the defender's have on their side sills.

I would say stay with the RTE, largely because last time I looked, running boards from a place like AB go for the same money.

Zak -

The running boards are easy to remove. I just took them off of my '99 D1 last week. Took me about 15 minutes (four bolts on each side attaching the running board and two on each front mud flap). Probably would have come off faster with some good SS hardware. I'd think you could fab a quick disconnect too.

Weight wise, they won't bend with 250 lbs of weight. When I washed my Disco the first time I was standing on mine and they did not flex at all (6'4" and 250).

If you are serious about wanting a set drop me a line. I'm thinking of selling mine (I'll never use them).

I've thought about the D90 steps, just not sure how i'd mount them on yet.

Zak,
Rovertym makes a removable step for the sliders.
Perhaps you could make a variation that hangs down closer to the ground. The RT step is around $90 so it must be very sturdy.

OR perhaps some Dweb welder-friend could make an RT removable step for your sliders as a baby shower gift.

Put a rope on the stool so that she can pull it in after she is in.

Keep the sliders. Some thing I did with my wife was to pull up to a curb to let her into and out of the vehicle.

Keep the sliders, ditch the wife!

Nah, got to keep the wife. But good idea though. Heck, then I could get the OME list, winch, etc.....

My main consern is that she drives the Disco a lot. We really don't have "my car" and "her car", so I need to get something for when she's driving it by herself. I'll probably keep the sliders, but I'd really like a roof rack, but have to do that later.

Mark,

Do you know if John was able to powder coat the sliders this week? I talked to him Tuesday and he was hoping to do it already and ship them out.

String, very good idea. Cheap and effective!!!!

Zak,
No, I haven't heard anything about our sliders.
He said he was having 12 coated. I don't know if that's 12 sliders or 12 pairs..... anyway... no news.

Jess,

Are those the D90 steps or the Running boards for a D1?

I think I'm going to keep the sliders. Thanks for the thoughts. She should be able to get in a lot easier with the 4" step they create. Although it would be cool if any fabricators out there could build some sort of step to use with the sliders, that drops down a little further, not that would be perfect!!!!!
