can't figure out why my superwinch won't work. It's almost new. Started winding in, then stopped after just seconds? Solenoid makes a clicking type sound, but nothing happens? checked all wires and they seem tight.

thoughts?

You didnt mention that it was a "Superwinch" in that other thread. You solved your own problem :)

Nothing wrong with Superwinch. Yours is not properly grounded. Check for tight and CLEAN ground connections from both the winch motor back to battery, and the solenoid pack.

Sometimes we think we have a found a solid ground point. But, rust inhibiting paint is preventing good metal to metal contact.

Um , for starters the solonoids are COMPLETE garbage Barry... Now your opening there "Nothing wrong with superwinch" doesnt seem to fit the scenario we are faced with here. Does it ?

Superwinch Bashers,

Based on your reasoning, All Discovery's should be branded as garbage because of a few faulty/unreliable experiences.

Nine out of ten times a single solenoid is sticking for one reason. The operator has reversed direction before the cable has come to a complete stop.

I HAVE used my Superwinch in anger...properly, with no problems. Knowing the potential weak link is a simple field fix, and inexpensive at $20.00...I carry a back-up solenoid.

Barry , I have been , IN , ON ,around , and under those little smokers. Its getting bashed for a reason. And it damn sure aint reversing the winch while its in motion.. Now , where you getting your "Nine out of ten" theory ?

Interestingly enough, I talked to the tech folks at SuperWinch last week. They feel that their standard solenoids have a one year life expectancy when used on a recreational basis and obviously less if used more.

I still have to get around to stopping at NAPA for those golf cart solenoids and we'll be ready to go!

One year lifespan? Then it's garbage. Kyle's Ramsey has been running as the Energizer Bunny for years now, as has my Warn. I know Kyle has a special fondness for planetaries, but that's another discussion topic....... :)

well personally, i would rather not have to swap out my solenoid every year. what happenes that one time you are stuck on the trail and the solenoid goes out, and you dont have your replacement? its gonna suck(yes it just happened to me)
basically, im just saying i would rather not have to worry about my winch going out on me, and jsut have something more reliable in the first place.

So I guess a Mile Marker Hydraulic 2 Speed 12,000 lbs winch would throw this discussion into Disco Web Hysteria...

Musky:

Do you have a MM on your Disco? From reading earlier posts, I thought you were in the process of rigging up a new ps pump to overcome the weak stock pump. Any progress?

I'm still thinking about the PTO option, but I'd like to know other ideas as well.

i have three MM right now

One is bolted into my home made under the bumber mount and will go on the disco pretty soon here

i have the satalite pump and the march double pulley...just waiting on a custom mount from a buddy that is a tool maker.

then it all goes on...the 2 stage pump should be cool...should have super fast line speed then down shift automagicly like a log splitter to a reliefvalved max of 2000psi yeilding just under 12000lb line pull if all my calculations are correct.

Will,

I hear ya..."basically, im just saying i would rather not have to worry about my winch going out on me, and just have something more reliable in the first place."

For me, the Superwinch has been reliable for the past two years and I don't give it a second thought.

Then again, I'm of the school of thought that would get an ARB. Am I tempting fate? Hey, on the positive side maybe I'll get to use that Hi-Lift someday!

I read all these winch discussions with an eye toward future purchase.

KYLE... what winch DO you reccommend?

If ya gotta have a planetary the M12 Warn is built pretty decent (Still a cluster). Otherwise , get a worm geared winch... Any of the Worms out there will surpass the planetary smokers. Some Worms are better then others. The husky gets alot of hype amongst the Land rover crowd but its not built as well as a Ramsey RE... Both are decent winches though...

So you recommend the Ramsey RE?
