I'm about ready to Purchase a new Disco. The dilema I face is a choice between the new '03 Disco SE with the 4.6 power plant and a '02 Kalahari edition. I don't know much about the Kalahari, but it looks just like the yellow one in the banner of this web site. Yellow, flat black hood, saudi bumpers, racks, sliders, special interior. I really like the look of both ,although they look completely different. I would appreciate any input on which to choose as well as more info on the kalahari. How many were made, etc. I found by searching the web that either 150 or 400 were made. Does this mean that resale may be better in 5 years on the Kalahari than the newly reworked Disco? Do they have a limited edition badging like the defender 110 had (ie 12 of 500).

I would hold off your purchase until you can get an 03 with a 4.6 and CDL.

I would go for the 03 but Wait until they bring the CDL back, then you will have the 4.6 and CDL : )

The Kalahari is just foo foo crap that is added, You would be better off buying an 01 - 01 1/2 DII that has the CDL nut on the TC then adding sliders and a real bumper over getting the Kalahari.

Just my .0002 worth

I'd wait and get an 2003 because I hear the 4.6 is just too damn sweet and definitely wait until the CDL becomes available. BUT... if you have your sights set on a Kalahari then I'd ask for major $$$ off MSRP and shoot for a pretty good deal. The dealer here has had three yellow ones since they came out and have not sold them. They told me I could get one at dealer cost - and I would have done it if they were CDL equipped. Looks like LR should have made more gray and white ones.... I guess yellow just isn't for everyone

I own a 2002 Kalahari and like it and I got it for the price of an SE. But i`d wait for the 2003 since its got the 4.6 and is a little pepier and the fact that you can get the CDL with the ETC will be nice. Although i`ve not had any problems with just the ETC. I know Alot of people knock the ETC but maybe they don`t know how well it really works. But ETC has its advantages over CDL and Vice Versa. So wait til ya can get a 2003 with BOTH!!! This way you will have the best of both worlds and then some.

Thanks for the information guys. My dealer said i could get the kalahari at his cost (around $35k) but I'm leaning towards the '03. By the way what is CDL. (central diff lock??)

CDL = Center Diff Lock

CDL is Center Diff Lock. Out on the trails, it often dictates which end of the tow rope you'll find yourself with that Jeep...:) Hands-down my vote is for the '03 w/CDL. The 4.6 gives the disco the badly needed boost and brings horsepower-to-weight ratio up to comparable level with the ML320 & 3.0 X5, with no real penalty in MPG. Resale Value? you have two things going in your favor: 1) "Series 3"- Owning the latest generation. Look at the resale value of the '99 D1 vs. '99 D2. 2) 4.6 engine - Look at the price difference between a '95 RR 4.0 vs. a '96 RR 4.6 HSE...I know I wouldn't have minded paying $2-$3k extra for a used "D1 4.6 HSE" if such a beast had existed...And did I mention CDL...?

Go for the '03. Besides the engine having noticably more power, the breaking has definitely improved. It does ride a bit smoother as well.

I have a 03 disco and it is awsome. lots of spunk and you may be able to rig the xfer case to lock (see expidition exchange) since the trac control is abs related and not xfer case related... I am prety sure that the xfer case is the same as in the 2002 so the internal hardware is still inside.

The extra power will come in handy when upsizing from stock boots about the Kalahari well there is no replacement for displacement all else is just bolt on cosmetic.

Those are my opinions only

I would avoid the 2002 at all costs due to the lack of CDL. Even if the 2003 is lacking the linkage in the US you might be able to do the upgrade yourself like in the 1999-2000 models. Check for the nipple on the t-case. The 4.6 is just a bonus. And as for the comments on ride or brakes... I wasn't aware they changed either the rotors/pads or springs on the 2003.
