Installing a Midland 77-115 radio in my D1 and I'm wondering what the heck that orange wire is for? I'm thinking ground, but I'm a total novice in the 12v arena. If it is a ground, does anyone have suggestions for wiring when using Chris de Jesus' lovely bracket? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, e |

What wires would you be referring to? Power wiring? My Midland only had two wires, a red and black, red for +12V and black for the ground. I ran the wires from the CB on the center console under the passenger seat to underneath the door sill trim to the front passenger kickpanel up to a hole in the firewall sealed by a rubber grommet. From there I found a ground, and ran the red wire to the positive terminal of the battery. |

Yeah, sometimes electronics like radios and CB's have a red +12volt, black ground and the orange may be either in place of the red or sometimes a memory or lighting wire. Did you check the website for wiring diagrams? Or consult the book? |

Unfortunately, (not a word Craig!) the radio did not come with a manual and the Midland site is about as worthless as a sockfull of pennies. No diagrams that I've been able to find on the Internet either. The orange wire is the center wire in a three-pin harness between black and red.
Thanks again, e |

Black is ground, the orange and red are both power feeds. One goes to a switched power feed, the other is constant on so the cb remembers the channel setting when you turn it off. Don't know which is which. If you want the ability to run the cb whether the ignition is on or not, run both to a constant power feed, that's how I hooked mine up. |

Thanks Axel, appreciate the advice. I've got a screw terminal inside the armrest of the center console - I'll try both options. Power is feeding from the lighter right now - too much draw on this fuse? Cheers, e |

The lighter circuit should be fine, a cb don't draw that much juice anyway. I found an unused power feed underneath my passenger seat that I hooked mine up to, I belive it was intended for the CD changer. |

FWIW I wired mine to the battery so I could leave the CB on even though the truck was turned off. Consider what you want your CB to do when you're going to power it. Also, I wired my GPS to the battery so it would always be on, even without batteries in the unit. |

Craig, Good point on the power in ACC versus OFF positions. I hadn't thought about being able to use the CB with the truck entirely off. How'd your move go? e |

Well, moving's always a bitch, but I'm settled in here in San Jose. The job search was a bitch too, but I'm happy to say I'm still here in the Bay Area. We should meet up for a beer soon! |

Yes, I second the power always on comment. I wired mine into the fuse box on a switched circuit, and have regreted it since. I'm rewiring this weekend for constant power direct to the battery. I found out on my first trip somewhere that I couldn't switch the truck off and still talk. Pretty much sucked. gp |

I wired mine up tonight. I've got the switched feed to the cigarette lighter fuse and the power feed to the headlights (I think). Nonetheless, you can turn off the engine and still use the CB as long as the key is in the Number I position. That way you don't have to remember to turn off the CB when you leave your truck, as you would if it was wired to your battery. Granted it doesn't draw that much power... but you know... just in case. JR |
