Got a question.....

If you take out the factory radio, how much room do you have behind there for putting another radio in? How deep of a radio can you insert into there?

Thanks,

Hello Leslie, I replaced my stock unit with a Premier MP3/CD player, about $350+wiring harness to keep from cutting up too manly wires. It fit just fine with no problems. If you are having someone else install it they will need a BMW radio key to get it out of there, at least that is what my friend said he used to get the other out. If you are in the Knoxville area drop by Audio Specialties and tell them I sent you. I've been friends with the owner since around 1980 so he is always a nice person to know when I need anything in that area. I also installed an amp under the passenger seat and threw a 12" JL sub in the back. Sounds Very Nice, and it is nice to have a disc with 200+ songs on it for those long trips. Later.. Hi Robert,

I was comparing radios on Crutchfield's site, and some fit and some don't, even though they're listed as being the same chassis size....

That's the reason for my question... I'm thinking about getting a better radio, and the one I liked said it didn't fit, though other ones similar to it did... supposedly because of the depth of the radio.

Does anyone actually know the max. depth that a radio can be and still fit in the dash of a Disco (Series I, not a II)?

Les,

FWIW

I'm on my third Head Unit from Sony now that I bought from crutchfield. They fit just fine. I dunno what the depth is but it seem pretty standard.

I've never heard of this being an issue with anyone installing an aftermarket head unit.

Just finished installing my Alpine 7894 mp3/cd this weekend. I used the factory amp and purchased a the volkswagon adapter made a simple modification to it. I also purchased two ground loop isolators from radio shack got it all wired together and installed in less than an hour. you can also use a 2mm hex to get the stock radio out two screws (they do not come all the way out) and stick your fingers in the tape slot and it should slide right out. The system sounds crystal clear. There are two antennas so you need to only use one. I used the one connected to the main on the back of the stock radio. Oh yeah you will also need an antenna adapter from the euro to a standard. When you go to put it in you need to make sure you get the wiring tucked in so it will slide in easily especiall if you put in the isolators. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

6.5" is the depth to the center post.... it could be motified to be deeper.

Crutchfield's application guide sucks. It appears their dimensions for the Disco is based off the stock radio instead of the dash dimensions.
My Alpine CDA-7892 fit perfectly with room to spare even though Crutchfield said it "does not fit." It required very little time to install (almost fool-proof); however, I did need to make a new post to locate the back of the head-unit because the stock post was the wrong thread size and slightly too long (FWIW, I found a short bolt with the correct threads in my junk-box that did the trick...).
Also, consider your future audio plans. I already installed aftermarket amps, so I needed 3 RCA outputs. The Alpine unit has it's RCA pre-outs connected to 3-4" leads. This places the connectors either underneath the head-unit or stuffed into a nook/cranny in the dash without interferring with the fit of the head-unit. If you plan on upgrading the amps in the future, it may be tough to hook up the patch cables if the RCA pre-outs are built into the back of the head-unit (this may push your patch-cables into the back of the dash).

classic range rovers are very shallow, just an FYI for anyone reading, there are very very few aftermarket units that will fit as neatly as stock

Isn't this the Discovery discussion board? CRR owners should be listening for things falling off the Rover, not listening to the radio...

Thanks for the input, all... sounds like the radio I'm considering would fit.

I don't have "big" plans, I'm not into the big booming bass in the local WalMart parking lot, lol, I'm just wanting something in there that's a bit better than stock with an in-dash CD player... I'm not going hi-end here, but anything should be better than the factory one. I just thought that a lot of the ones that Crutchfield was saying wouldn't fit, should fit...

I appreciate the info!

Leslie,
I just upgraded my head unit in my 97. I got everything running except the rear sub. With the 6 speakers running (4x4" 2 tweeters on the A pillar) I must say that music sounds lacking. The low end is not there. I will probly add a Bazooka Tube woofer to compensate. I recommend looking at the replacing the speakers when you do the head unit.

im curious about all of the posts that people have made with aftermarket radios..after the install did the dash radio buttons still work? how can you get them to work or is that integrated in a new harness? thanks i would like to connect a new deck and possibly some speakers, but would still like the dash buttons to work if at all possible..d1 any places in the bay area that know rover radio installs?

Jmon,
If you really want the dash buttons keep the head unit. Replace the stock speakers w/ a nice set of 4" component speakers for the front and rear. I think that may give you the biggest improvement in sound quality while keeping your dash buttons intact. I have heard that there are some clarion or sony units that have wires in the back for volume adj. and such that can give you some limited dash controls..

Another option I went with is a simple wheel mounted remote control. The Kenwood set up I have works well, although it still uses IR so you have to have the wheel mostly straight, but I feel it's safer than the dash controls, since it's all by feel. Plus it's in a more comfotable spot.
It can control every component you can think of and switch between sources, yada yada yada... it tucks right behind where the airbag cover is to not interfere

If you're interested, it can be found at http://www.kenwoodusa.com/product/product.jsp?productTypeId=40&sortBy=price&productId=168

damn peter , you need to tuck those the antenna wires behind the A-pillar there bud.

i use a little remote controll that came with my unit. it was great because passengers could use it too and you didnt actually feel like lifting your arm up.

i found the factory buttons to be in a poor location anyway.

I have a master plan for the wiring but need to find a WHOLE free day to get it all done. It includes, now don't be offended, rewiring some of your stuff to put in a single fuse block for all accy (about 12 when all is said and done). I also need to get a CB before then.
At that time I'll route the antenna wire (and the temp gauge) through the firewall and none will be the wiser.
I'll be happy if I get it all done by Christmas.

The handheld remote is handy for passengers but once again, you gotta look to find the thing. I also feel silly pointing a remote at a HU from 2 inches away. :)

I'm thinking of replacing those dash radio controls with aux. light switches to make things pretty and use that wasted space.

Could someone share what wiring adaptor they are using. Someone mentioned using a VW Adaptor. Do you know for what year and model VW the adaptor is for. No one seems to list a Discovery Wiring adaptor but I'd prefer to keep my wiring in tack. At least for power to the deck. I'll be running my own amps and speaker wire so thats not as important but I dont want to hack into the OEM harness for power and ground.
Also, anyone know of any good places to tap into for power and ground behind the dash. Is there a good factory grounding block. What about power. Range rovers have a nice +12v Switched area to tap into by the firewall, not sure about the discovery's.
Thanks
Todd

ok peter, i'm warning you though, the disco never tried to bite me. so maybe it want you to leave well enough alone.

a fuse block would be cool. i tried to have that common terminal point up buy the driver side. and it worked okay, you should have seen my first wiring of everything, you dont realize how big of an improement you have there.

i hear you with the anteenna an tempo gauge, it's kind of gay piping it threw the door.

changing the switches out in the dash is okay, but take a look in there ... hehe

as you can tell buy the extra switch i sent, that was my intent too
