Need to purchase new tires for a 98 Discovery with stock wheel snad the original Michelins on it. IS it true that I must buy those agian, because, as the dealer said they are the only ones strong enough to hold the trucks weith. Looking for soemthing for highway driving and occasional (4 times a year) snow. Any suggestions.
Thanks

Don't listen to anything that the dealer tells
you. They are a bunch of idiots. YOu can buy
any tire you want. I would go with all-terrains
from bf-goodrich. I have those and they are
awesome. Besides those michelins suck compared
to the all-terrains.

The dealer is full of shit! Tons of choices... If you're not going off road that much, look for A/Ts, they're the best compromise IMHO. The stock tire size is 235/70R16. Go to tirerack.com and search for the tire size and you'll see a lot of choices. Good luck!

FYI, FWIW, the Continental Sport Tracs on Ford Expeditions and Lincoln "blingbling" Navigator (again) are being recalled.

You definitely don't have to purchase that size if you don't want to. However, if running the interstate and you're not concerned with offroading, then probably best to stick with that size. I've got a set of Michelin Cross Terrain SUV 235/70/16s for sale with around 1Ok on them. Should be good for around 50k on the highway and at half the price of new ones. These tires are very well taken care of and were rotated 3 times during their stay on my truck. If you're interested let me know. I'm in Knoxville, TN but will be more than happy to ship. My email is acting up but you can email me at [email protected] Peace.. Robert Sublett

One thing that I would suggest....

When looking for 235/70R16 tires, look for LT tires, not P tires. Yes, it does make it more difficult to find tires, but, that's what the dealer was referring to, that with the weight of a Disco, you'd be better off with LT tires.

FWIW....

The dealers are just quoting the load rating listed in there guides, some tire makers are conservative on there ratings.. There just preventing lawsuits

I have a stock 96 D1 and do the same driving you are talking about.Got rid of the screaming slippery stock michelins and purchased the Pirelli Scorpion S/T 235/70-16.Tires are extremely quiet on the road , great in the rain and as far as snow only been in shallow stuff seems to be ok,they are rated pretty good for snow. They also work good on beach without airing down and they have the same weight and speed rating as the michelins at almost half the price.
