second thoughts

I've owned a used '94 Disco for several years now and have been happy with its performance. My family has grown and am in need of another family vehicle. I am exploring several options but one is to get rid of my smaller cars and get another Disco, probably a '98 or '99.

As happy as I have been with my Disco, I am experiencing some trepidation about both of my vehicles being Land Rovers. The nearest Land Rover dealership is a little over an hour away. However, I have a great independent mechanic in my town. He's worked on Land Rovers forever and I have found him to be straightforward, but he is just a one-man operation. If the truck is in the shop for a couple days he doesn't have a fleet of loaners to hand out.

I am not dumping on Land Rover, I am just wondering if I am asking for trouble if I go down to a two Disco family. Any thoughts?

You're probably better off with the independent mechanic that understands LRs as opposed to the dealership anyway. Besides, the later year D1s are known to be less prone to quirks. I'd say go for it!

Good luck!

look at the upside of owning 2 discos - you can always use one for parts to keep the other one running...

ST,

I am in the EXACT situation, even with the location of the dealer and the local mechanic. I have two DI's now - I have a decent 94 and my wife has a mint 95. We both love them, but of course we look like the yuppy scum of the neighborhood with his-and-her Rovers!

We are of the two extremes when it comes to Rover philosophy: She thinks it's a luxury vehicle that happens to be 4WD, and I think it's a truck/tank that happens to have leather and air.

BUT... they do break down ALOT. And parts/repairs do get expensive. I agree with Blue tho - as a matter of fact her Borla is now on my truck! Woohoo!!!...

I guess you have to assess your love for the truck before you put your cash down. I was ready to sell mine last week because the repair bills started to get out of hand, but I simply couldn't do it...

Hope it works out for you...

Blue is on to something. Also, your learning curve for repairs and maintenence will be much steeper, you can "stock up" on oil filters and other repair maintenence items and the same tools will work for both vehicles. Aside from the Ignition system and a few EFI parts, the vehicles are identical.....except that the 98-99 D1s are of WAY better build quality than your 94.

In our driveway:

95 Disco (mine)
91 RR Classic (wife's)
99 Disco (belongs to the couple who rent the studio above our garage)

Man , I keep hearing this about "The build quality" and yet I see more issues with the later models then I do the early ones. The two here arent plagued with nearly the amount of crap that the late models seem to be..

Ditto to Kyles statement, my 88 RRC went 190k before deciding to piss me off, If it was not for the City of San Diego i would still have it.

The 97 D1 I have manages to do that all the time and at 64k the heads need to be rebuilt, 1 bad O2 sensor all the hoses oil water and transmission hoses have needed to be changed to excessive leaking, metal shavings in the rear diff, Harmonic balancer rubber was rotted out and I am changing that out this weekend. 4 window regulators changed battery and both positive and negative cables, the POS brake light switch twice, all the rear fixed window rubber needed to be changed major cracking. This has been the worst car as far as quality I have ever owned.... Oh and Ive only had it for 18 months

Besides the bottom dropping out of the value of it after I bought it I can not even sell the dam thing. So like my in-laws Im stuck with it

Will I buy another newer Land Rover NO, ill stick with the older ones from now on until there rusted out of existence
