Quick question-
My rear differential gear oil looks pretty good, the front looks like it has water in it. Needless to say, I'm changing the front out this afternoon. Does anyone have a trick for funneling oil into the fill hole? Would you go ahead and change out the rear too? Thanks in advance for any posts.

change both front & rear diffs - hell, change the center too. as long as you're under there, why not? you'll also be on the same time shedule for the next changing. I purchased an el cheapo suction pump that screws right onto the top of a quart bottle of gear oil. Any auto store will have em for about $5-10.

I just use a short piece of plastic tubing shoved over the end of the nozzle on the bottle.

If you want to get fancy, there are any of a number of nifty valves with hose barbs, or pieces of tubing. Sometimes, it is nice to have the valve so you can orient the bottle where you want it without oil running down your arm!

also...sounds like you got some water in your diff. this could be a problem if its a recurring theme. Check your diff bolts and make sure they are tight, but don't overtighten, call LR for the right torque.

Ramsay, the gear oil I purchase has always had a spout on top, not sure it that is the correct term, but it's a tall narrow bottle, and you have to cut the tip off of the top to pour it out. I usually just get it a quart at a time though.

Along the same line as Bill, you may be getting water in the diff from several areas:
1) axle breather tubes - are they extended in engine bay, are they cracked, loose connections.
2) axle breather nut - is this clogged, loose
3) hub seals - when is last time you replaced while repacking bearings.
If you wade in water, it's worth the effort to trace down.
Good luck

Thanks guys. I bought the gallon jug and ended up springing for the $3 pump option.

Yeah, I'd say I had some water in there. Made pretty little swirls in my bucket though. I'm in the process of tracking down the leak.

Thanks again.
