Traveling between 5 to 40 mph, I can hear this intermittent high pitch noise from my right front wheel (I think). At first, it happens when I turn my wheel to the right and now it does it in straight line. It drives me nuts. Is there something wrong with my 96 disco? Thanks.

Might also be a grenaded CV joint. When they let go catastrohpically, the bits and pieces of the cage and the balls will rub up against the ABS sensor ring and make a sound not unlike a siren.

Hurry up and do your inspection as this is likely a harbinger of worse things if ignored, be it a CV joint,or a wheel bearing.

Is there a tech write-up somewhere that discusses how best to go about this inspection ? I don't have the problem Ed mentioned, but I'm always paranoid and not sure what to look for. Guess what I'm asking is what would I see if I did have an issue down there?

The folks at DiscoWeb have helped me and alot of other people with plenty of problems, however I think this is one you're going to have to work through by yourself Kent. Hang in there bud.

It could be the Fetzer valve ( although it's all ball bearings these days) ....but this link will explain how to trouble shoot step by step..

Ed:
To a great degree, wear and damage to any of the components contained in the swivel housing and related assemblies are difficult to detect by visual inspection-until they start to go badly wrong. I have jokingly stated on many occasions that a scanning electron microscope might be a handy thing to have when working on Rovers for this very reason.

Bearings might begin to show some discoloration if they have gone dry and gotten hot. Check the inner surface of the race for scoring or heat marking. You may be able to detect some increase in clearances in the wheel bearings after removing the grease. Also, check the appearance of the hub where the bearings ride.

CV joints, there is very little that can be detected without aid. You may be able to determine if the cage/balls have worn if the CV joint will move on the end of the shaft more than a few thousandths (that is kind of misleading-what you're looking for is play between the inner star and the axleshaft. If it's sloppy, you may have some wear). If you disassemble the entire CV joint, you might be able to see evidence of wear on the cage or the balls-DON'T BE ALARMED by what appears to be evidence of overheating on the inside of the cavity of the stub axle-it's just heat treating (case hardening or carbo-nitriding).

Of course, if the oil comes out looking like mud or you find loose parts inside, that's usually a bad sign.

Can I get all the bearing parts from the local auto store?

Wheel bearings, go to your local Napa and ask for Timken set 37. You need 2 per wheel.
