I recently got an extra (stock) steel rim for a second spare tire for desert off-roading trips. My D1 came with an alloy spare. Do the alloy wheel lug nuts work with the stock L/R steel spare tire rim or you you need a set of different lug nuts for the steel wheel?

The alloy lug nuts will work. The only reason people switch to steel lug nuts when they get steel rims is looks.

And the steel nuts do not work on the alloys. Last year at a trailhead one disco owner arrived with a flat tire. He was running 4 steel wheels with the alloy on the back as the spare . . . well, he ended up borrowing my steel spare for the day :)

They work, and they look badass too.

Actually, my recollection is that the lug nuts for steel wheels have a taper that centers the wheel, and the lug nuts for alloys are flat because the taper would destroy the alloy wheels and the wheel is already center located by the hub.
