Whoa! I was just going to post the same question! I am intrigued by this product. I noticed that it includes special valve stems ... I was thinking of getting those flush type valves to prevent stem cuts on the trail (not that its ever happened, but just cheap insurance), so is there an Equal friendly flush valve available? -bender2033 |

Kyle, The tire guy at CostCo looked at me like was one fire when I asked him about Equal. In fact I dont think they would honor warranty if I had them install the packets. Also, they seemed *VERY* insistant about the "H" load rating but H load tires are $200 each (the Michelins XPCs) and I really wanted the BF Goodrich AT KOs. ps - I guess I really should register here. LOL |

Opps, There is no such beast as "H" load rating, my bad. H is the speed rating. After reading tirerack.com I can now speak inteligently about tires. I see that the michelins have 105 or 109 load ratings and H speed ratings. I damn sure dont need H speed rated AT tires. |

The only thing that stops me from giving it a try is that moisture affects in negatively. However, I don't know in what amounts. I almost exclusively use C02 to air up my tires after wheeling. There is a higher moisture content in that then using a regular air compressor. Any thoughts? Tom |

Tom, not trying to start an argument here or anything, but I would seriously doubt that co2 has more moisture than compressed air. Even if the line coming off the compressor has a water trap (filter) - the air is still very moist and even more so with no filter. If you've ever drained a compressor or emptied a filter at the end of a day of compressor use - you'd know what I mean. We use c02 in my shop here for hose testing and it's mositure content is 15 ppm (that's parts per million!) - compressed air is certainly more by many times. Bill |

I agree with Bill. CO2 is very dry. Both Ho and I use the Power Tank exclusively to air up after trail runs and we have never had a problem with moisture inside the tires affecting the Equal. |

Bill, I don't want to argue, either. Just find truth, because I really want to use Equal to rid myself of the gagillion weights on my rims. Now, even though CO2 is dry, is the fact that it comes out so cold an issue? My hose ends up with a frost on it, then that frost turns into moisture. Doesn't happen with my air compressor. I like the direction this is going. I was doing some research and I found that any moisture inside the tire could affect the performance of Equal, but it quickly evaporated away. Tom |

Tom - see what you mean about the frozen fittings and regulators, but just because you cannot see the moisture with the air compressor doesn't mean it's not there - it's all going inside the tire with the air since it's not cold enough to freeze (it's actually very hot). Again, look at a manual drain filter on a compressed air system that has been used all day - lots of water in there! I'm pretty anxious to try the Equal also - guess I'd better buy some new tires to justify it to myself! LOL Bill |

Tom, Both Ho and I use Equal and we use the Power Tank exclusively to air up after trail rides. We also air up the other people on our trail rides. After airing up 20 or more tires, the regulators and air lines on the Power Tanks are frosted and sometimes even the tanks as well. We have never experienced any ill effects of using cold CO2 in the "equalized" tires. |

Ok ok .. GOOD NEWS! I just called my local tire distribution warehouse, iTco, and they are VERY familiar with EQUAL, and they also said that the tire warranty would not be negated if Equal was used. SO I'm going to take the equal plunge! -bender2033 |

FYI- I spoke to a guy at a tire shop about this topic recently and he warned that many manufacturers are aware of similar products (he did not mention equal by name) and that they the manufacturers are against it for some strange reason. He said that many have gone so far as to say it will void any warranty on the tire. Please post which company(s) will honor the warranty as I may be interested in the product as well. |

Bill and Tom - there is a good reason why you see frost on fitting with CO2. When you air up with CO2 - it flows from a highly compressed state, to a relatively low compressed state (higher volume). To expand, the gas absorbs energy from its surroundings (the tire, the hose, and the metal fittings). The metal fittings however, have a much better heat transfer coefficient. They get colder faster and the moisture in the air you are breathing, condenses and freezes. Since the CO2 is compressed somewhere else (not on the trail) the heat energy has already been removed. If you use an air compressor on the trail, yoy would notice that the compressor tends to get hot. Its trying really hard to disipate the excess heat, however, the compressed air has a lot of heat in it. When you air up, the compressed air from the compressor, doesn't have take as much heat from its surroundings and you don't notice frost as often. However, you may notice the inflator tip gets cool. Thats it for the PVT lesson today folks. Tomorrow, stay tuned for our next exciting topic. Works exactly like your air-con unit. |

Jason - I asked about the Dunlop Radial Rovers R/T, the distribution center said Equal was no problem to use. The service manager said he thought that Goodyear might have a problem with it though. So, just be sure to ask. |

Josh, Where did you get it done locally? The folks who make Equal pointed me to a Les Schwab in Arlington that has the equipment to add Equal to a mounted tire. They also do drop in packets if you are putting on new tires. Who else is doing it in the area? I'm North of Seattle so Arlington is convenient but I'm curious about other dealers in case things change at this Les Schwab. Also, the folks that make Equal say it won't void any tire manufacturer's warranty. This was confirmed by managers/owners at several local tire dealerships. They wouldn't install the stuff but they don't care if you add it yourself and they would continue to support their warranties. Rick |

I purchased some tires from Discount Tires in Chlt about 4 months ago. I was there getting them rebalanced a couple of weeks ago and asked them about Equal. They were not familiar with that particular brand, but were familiar with the concept. I asked what they would charge to break the beads and throw in the bag. Their response was "Hell, you bought the tires here, we won't charge you anything". Man, I love service like that. The local 4Wheel Parts wanted $25 per tire! |

Greg, the local Discount Tires wouldn't put the stuff in. That's why I had to find the Les Schwab. The Discount Tires guys all said that they fully support the usage of Equal and it won't nullify their extended warranty but, "We can't put anything that 'moves around' inside the tire. That includes sealants like slime or balancing products." There seems to be wide variation between what different Discount Tires managers are willing to do. Similar to the fact that some won't put 265/75 on a DII because it isn't "stock" and some will. Rick |

Me too. My spare tire used to hang predominately in the front, but since I started eating Equal my beer gut has evened out around my entire waist!! Don't believe the hype about moisture having an adverse effect either, it goes down great with a Sam Adams. |

I have installed Equal in my set of 265s -- it took a little looking for a shop that even heard of the stuff. I finally had to call the distributor for New Mexico to find a dealer. All the usual shops, Big O; Discount Tires, Sears, and the major dealers for Firestone, Bridgestone, etc., never even heard of the stuff. However, the shop I was referred to mainly sold tires to semi-trucks. The owner said that 98% of his Equal business comes from semi owners -- the rest "from them pesky four wheelers" -- and he was not talking about the off-road crowd. He too warned about the moisture, but indicated that it would take a chunk of water to interfere with Equal's functioning. His self-report is that nearly all the tires he installs on semi^s request Equal. Now you got to remember where we are in Albuquerque along the I40. I would take that self-report pretty serious. As far as using the stuff -- I had a mildly interesting observation. After about three miles, I got onto I40 -- as she got up to 50+ the tires, and the DSII started wobbling like a crazy mother -- suddenly, I was getting an ass massage for free. Then bango, the wobbling stopped cold. It was that abrupt. I got up to 75 and she was smooth as ice. The only thing I can figure is that the bags opened inside the tires and balanced them. |

Can this stuff settle in the tires? I mean, if you have it in your spare, will it settle in the spare and not be balanced, or will it remain "mobile" and as soon as the spare starts rotating (when included in tire rotation) it will balance itself out? Make sense? |

Bill Bettridge (Billb)

Greg - that is how I understand it - the stuff is mobile all the time. This allows it to constantly balance the tires by moving to the area needed. So for the spare, yes, I'd imagine it would just sit at the bottom (especially an unopened packet ) until the tire spins and it distributes itself to the needed area(s). Bill |

Erik, the the valve stems are not replaced. Only the cores are replaced. "3 oz. Equal Tire Balancer (F) $9 per tire Each 3 oz. bag of Equal will balance one 235/70, 245/75, 235/85, or 265/75 sized tire. Just drop the bag into your new tire before mounting. The drop-in bag will break apart after a few miles and release the Equal into your tire and your tire will be balanced for its useful life. Replacing the standard valve core with the AirX Filtered Valve Core and replacing the standard plastic valve stem cap with the metal sealing valve stem cap completes the installation. Each 3 oz. bag of Equal comes complete with one AirX Filtered Valve Core and a metal sealing valve stem cap for a complete and proper installation." |

EQUAL Rocks! And EE Rocks for bringing this amazing product to the Land Rover community! At least that's how I found out about equal. John and Ho are definitely Land Rover Enthusiasts, and even though I don't always agree with their opinions, I respect and appreciate their advice. If EE carries it, it's ALWAYS worth considering. If it weren't for EE and D-Web my truck wouldn't be setup nearly as competently, or look as cool! LOL I also wouldn't have met the great people I wheel with. Sorry for the "Sucking Up" but I think a little Kudos is in order! Thanx guys, your work is greatly appreciated by many!!! And remember, it's important to respect other opinions! Critisism raises the bar and is ALWAYS good, but do it respectfully! Some of us live in parts of the country where dirt, mud, and rocks are not as easy to come by, but are appreciated just as much! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeedoggie! LOL |
