any suggestions besides calling a locksmith to get a piece of my key out of the ignition. i can see it in there, but just is not moving from it place. my Leatherman is not helping and i don't want to mess anything up any more than it is. they said it is a 50/50 chance.

TIA

Locking forceps. You can find them in any medical, model, or even electrical suppy store. They are narrow enough to get in there to get a grip on the key stub.

I've been there.

Good luck

Try a big magnet? Worth a try.

Keys are brass - magnet won't work

Garrett - how about a few small picks? They have sets a Lowes/HD cheap and with different angles on the tips.....

Good luck

I just applied a magnet to my key. It worked. Now it may be coated with a magnet friendly metal and the brass may be the only thing sticking out.

my lame ass dealer was out of keys for my truck and didn't have the means to cutt them in house , so they gave (sold) me a blank and told me i should goto an old fasion key cutter and warn then it was steel. after it's cut i didnt see any brass so i assumed it was true. new put a magneto to it.

Ok - here is what I would do.. If the key/ lock already had issues, like it wouldn't turn and now it has snapped and you are screwed..

JB weld a quarter or the broken key end back onto the lock and broken key piece and drive it like this till you buy a new lock and key assembly.

I had the same thing happen to me about two months ago when I was down in Savannah GA (from charlotte) went to Bonaventure cemetary on a sunday afternoon and the key broke off in the ignition. called the locksmith (with the threat of spending the night in the cemetary looming over me it seemed like the best thing to do). He tried and called in a couple different locksmiths from his shop to help and the only thing that we could figure out was to actually unbolt the shift locks and pull apart the locking mechanism from the starter(plastic thing the locking thing turns). This way they were able to see down into the ignition itself and tried to extract the key..since time was short they didn't try to pull the key piece out and I just started up the truck and drove home....two months later...key is still stuck and I still just twist the plastic thing and start the truck up and drive home...
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it is easier to see down into the ignition hole when it is disconnected from the steering column and it might be possible for you to extract the key that way. Just a thought.
good luck

Try applying a drop of superglue to the end of the key fob, and then hold it against the broken section in the lock. Keep it still and let the glue set. Hopefully you will be able to remove the key. Don't use too much glue though, 'cause if it runs out in there you will really be screwed. This has actually worked for me in the past. I used to be a maintenence guy for an apartment community.

Garrett (GP), I feel for your situation. I've come close to breaking my key off in the ignition. I finally after months of praying the ignition would turn, ordered a ignition switch assembly. I got it from www.roverlandparts.com, ask for Robert. I ordered mine Monday morning, and it was at the house on Wednesday for alot cheaper than anyone else would sell it to me for. It is used, but at 1/3 the cost, it's worth the risk to me. Sorry man.

"My dad's a TV repairman, he's got a bitching set of tools."

Sorry, all that talk about smokin' dope and tools led me right to Fast Times at Ridgemont High! Or maybe it was a flashback to broken cars in parking lots of Dead shows!
