I'm looking at 2 used Discos. First is a '00, cloth, no extras, 28k miles, $26,000. Second is '01, SD, no extras, 9k miles, $28,000. Dealer is offering the $100 deductable warranty on the '00 out to 84 month, 86k miles, which gives it more warranty than the newer one (factory warranty only). I can't locate any 'model year difference' guide. What I see on a quick glance is: '00 has small section of painted front bumper, fog lights below that. Head light washers, trailer tow package. Any differences in drivetrain at all? Any reliability differences that you know of? Thanks for any advice you can give on making a decision... -John Friederich Las Vegas, NV |

John, They are the same truck. Pick the one you like best. Good luck. Carl |

John, depending on the date of manufacture for the '01, they are NOT the same truck. Mid year '01 they began using transfer cases that had the CDL actuating nut removed. If you intend to use your vehicle off-road at all, make sue the CDL nut is present on the '01. All '00's had it. If you lay on your back under the passenger side of the vehicle, with your head towards the front, reach up between the front prop shaft and the transmission. Keep feeling around, and you should locate a small threaded stud that sticks up about an inch. It is located on the top of the transfer case, near the transmission. The plate securing the stud is attached with three bolts arranged in a triangle. If this is not present on the '01, then I would recommend the '00. Other than that, the only differences are the trim levels (fog lights, seating surfaces, sound system, etc.). But the CDL stud is VERY key if you plan on four-wheeling even in the slighest. |

Thanks for this tip. I'll check it out this afternoon. This truck is taking the place of our loved '89 Dodge Raider, used almost exclusively for off-roading, as we have daily passenger cars. We want just a little more room, plus the Raider failed to get us up a mining road in central Nevada (one very steep grade, loose shale, steep side grade) that we had made it up in previous years. Again, thanks, and looking forward to joining the Discovery 'community'. -John Friederich Las Vegas, NV |

John, with that being said the ability to lock the CDL should be top priority for you. It makes all the difference in the world! |

BTW, you can purchase the extended warranty from just about any dealer prior to the end of your warranty. So don't let them fool you on the upfront stuff. They just want you to roll it into your financing so your paying interest on that too. |

Well, I'm really leaning to the '00 as it is cloth AND white, both important if you live in as hot a climate at this (IMHO). I've been here 25 years, and have never sat in a cloth or leather seat I've been comfortable in in shorts, especially. The '01 is vinal and dark grey, a bad combo for here, I think. Anything I should really look at before purchasing the '00? Thanks... -John Friederich Las Vegas, NV |
