My front left bearings went out about 4 months ago. I got them changed out and for about a month they were fine. Then it started acting up again and i remembered the guy saying that the front left axel stub (forgot the name out of rovers north where i got another one) where the bearings rode might need replacing because it was scraped. So i took it to a shop and again they changed out both bearings (left & right)and changed the axel stub. It was fine for about 3 weeks and it started the same noise. The grinding noise that seems to go along with the turning of the tire. Its the same noise that started before the bearings went bad the other times. Also when i went to get my mud tires put on the guy noticed black grease all around the inside of my wheel that obviously was flung out while i was driving. He thought it was the brakes but i believe it is coming out of the hub. Is the seal not properly placed or what is going on here. I've replaced the bearings twice and it has a new wheel axel stub so there must be something else wrong , please help. |

did you replace the seals as well, or just re-use the old seals? |

I don't think the black grease is coming from the bearings, it's probably coming from the swivel. The shop you took it to replaced the axel stub? Was it a Landrover shop? Where did they get the stub from? They replaced the inner and outer left and right bearings? Other than the grease on the tire, what makes you think it's the bearings? John C. |

yeah, good point John The grinding noise that seems to go along with the turning of the tire. what kind of condition is your CV in? That could be the culprit... |

Not sure about the screeching sounds, and I'm not educated enough about those things to know. CV joint sounds like a good guess, but don't take my word for it. The grease on the inside of the tire though could very very well be from a leaky swivel. If you take a look at my tire on the inside, and even on the inside of the fender well, it is everywhere, though I have gear oil instead of grease... If it's been taken apart alot, and the seals not replaced then that may very well be that part of the issue. Like I said, just opinions stated there, not facts.. Peace.. RS |

1 - Might be leaking around the abs sensor bushing at top of swivel pin housing where the brake lines go into the swivel housing. 2 - Or the 14mm bolts holding the swivel assembly to the axle housing may be loose 3 - or the grease/oil was there from before or got there from sloppy work. Have you checked the swivel ball fluid level and diff level to see what is low right now to indicate a current leak since its been to the shop where we can assume they topped everything off ( yeah right) It is pretty easy to pull the CV out once you have the wheel and seals pulled to check them - also pretty DIY.. a tech link here somewhere outlines cvs and hubs and seals... good luck, you've spent enough money already!!! http://www.yellowdefender.com/how_to_tips/c_v_repair/index.htm http://www.spanishtrailrovers.com/Tech/Maintain/maintain.html |

Before I hit the dealer, I'd set aside an afternoon and take a look for myself. Worst case, you carefully dismantle everything, and just put it back together the same way it came apart. Take some pics and post them for dwebbers to mull over. Do you have a manual? If not, I can be persuaded to fax you the pertinent pages from my manual. I'm heading out of the office for the weekend, but I'll be back Monday and I'll try to remember to throw my manuals in the Disco... |
