I am wondering what to start with when upgrading I want lockers and am thinking the detroit and tt, but wouldn't mind having arb in the front. Or should I get a lift first since it would cost more and I could get a good set of mud tires under my disco. Any Ideas? |

If you have a D2 then I would say CDL. But in generall I think it's better to work on recovery and armor first (ARB or other bumper, sliders and recovery gear), then lift and tires then lockers if you want them. |

... and what Mike said. http://www.bb4wa.com This reminds me of a recent trip I did where three bubbas in a full size p/u with lockers front and rear and 44" tires asked if I was running lockers. And much to my amazement and theirs I walked over places where they were getting stuck despite having TWO spotters. |

dont' know if this will answer brad's original question, but i was just thinking... if i were to do it over, i'd take the disco, do a mild lift, 235/85 MTs, sliders, dual TTs and leave it at that. what i hope i would end up with is a real effective stealthy disco. but then, of course, we are human afterall. gotta have the sexy shit. LOL |

Kent, Monday im making a set up if it work's out ill go ahead and do up 15 or 20 more sets. Brad, to realy answer your question go for safety and recovery items first then as you get to know your ride beef it up as your budget desires. |

I'm a recent newbie to all this...99 D2, I went in this order: Recovery gear (hi-lift, straps, chain), OME lift, 265/75 tires, RTE sliders, CDL, cut front end for recovery points. To do it again, I would've done sliders, CDL first. Vehicle protection is a must, my sliders have saved my lame-drivin-ass many times now. |

I go fourwheeling alot and so far the most places I get stuck is where 2 wheels are spinning in mud and I am high centered in a deep rut. And if I had lockers I would have probly gotten out maybe because the other tires were touching a little. The bumper and sliders are a must and I am going to go with a rovertym front and tjm rear and fuel skidplate. I have the front skid already. Thank you for the info. |

Add the bumper and vehicle body and undercarage protection first so that. when you go to buy a lift kit you know what spring rate you need. Most manufactures can make a recomendation on your average vehicle weight. I made that mistake with my jeep and than had to change the springs latter due to front end sag from the winch and bumper |

Thanks for the info I think my next pay check will go to a front bumper and then a new rear bumper mine has a nice smiley face on it which needs to be taken care of. For the lockers though will the tt lock up both wheels even if one is in the air or will the arb be the only one that can for the front. But in the rear I think I want a detroit that should work just fine for me. |

Brad, FWIW, I focused first on tires, recovery points and gear, along with sliders, and front and rear diif guards. They paid for themslves immediately, LOL. Money was running a little low after that ... I did put some MD OME springs on the front (tricked SLS in the rear - I know, I know, I'll have to deal with that probably more sooner than later, LOL). Since I already had a brush bar, I (well okay, hubby Greg did it for me) slapped some lights on (IPF 900's - I like the Hellas, but I'll admit, at this point I was just itching for something a little more sexy, and I got those more quickly in time for an excursion). CDL (at least a more convienient version) comes next. I'm patiently (??!! LOL) waiting to get a front bumper ... As long as Greg can keep fixing my rear bumper for me, it'll have to wait. My MD springs are sagging, and I want to do everything at once ... new shocks, springs, and,,, since I have a D2, I'm going to most probably be looking at a new U joint sooner or later. After new bumper, etc., I think I'll look into TT's and then think about halfshafts or whatever the hell comes next. Oh, and we're dying for a roof rack (much needed for a variety of reasons)!! However, I can't reconcile the dern thing not fitting in the garage ... so,,,, then comes a new house I guess? Best wishes, Kim |

you been chatting with ron, mike? ;) kim, you are using all the big words and abreviations now , like "TT's" , so whats it been a year? i cant remember any longer, cool to see the evolution. brad, depending on your offroading competency i dont have a problem at all with someone tossing a detroit in the rear of a bone stock disco (upgrade the axels too) matter of fact, i like the idea for the ass kicking you could hand out with a saggy used rover. however, i like lift , tires , bumper and winch, then locker and protection. lot's of folks here want that protection first, and thats cool, but if you start tossing all that weight on you will have a serious low rider. i know because thats the route i took in my discovery. i was getting stuck on everything because of it. arguably adding to the potential of damage that the plates were supposed to protect me from, like a self fulfilling prophecy. anyway, eventually i got the lift and it turned out that i rarely, if ever, would even contact my skid plates or sliders. i never hit the sliders, mainly becasue i kept the atttude that denting the vehicle was not an option. if you drive like that , you have more stress, but you can prevent most situations. my project range rover, will have sliders, but not these crazy slam the truck off of shit type... i just want something that will proved some strength and wont gouge. i guess i'm not hard core. i am focusing more on driveline upgrades with a few elegant protective solutions, like bumpers and winch. depending on if i find a can't pass it up deal on something, i recon it will go something like this, suspension lift, tires, winch+bumper, lockers, protection. (with lots of stealthy driveline upgrades during the gathering process) i will try to orchestrate all of that into a "rover weekend" in which i keep everything piled up in the garage and then creat a monster of a 3 day weekend good luck rd |

Portals are nice but not really practical. "do a mild lift, 235/85 MTs, sliders, dual TTs and leave it at that" I would have to agree with Ho. Just make sure you get a front diff gaurd and some HD steering rods and a damper relocation kit if it is a DI. I have stock dampers that got destroyed stacked like cord wood. See you at MAR! For all of us there, that seemed to be the only line, and no one else got damage, but everyone else had sliders. I just slipped That plastic sill breaking was quite the noise to hear. Not a good sound... Not quite sure what happened except I have some bent metal now. I'm about to go outside and beat it with a hammer Later.. Rob S |

Mike, "I dunno - I'm thinking portals, body lift, and 42's... just a little trimming and it's all good." ...yeah baby!!! ;-) hehe So, you're not at Pismo either this weekend? Rob, LOL, yeah it is kind of funny ... I picked up the Land Rover on St. Patrick's Day, 2001. I used to describe things a bit differently, "what is available as protection for my differentials?" ... "differential lock" ... and so forth, hehe. Still got quite a ways to go, LOL I do gotta say, I am a strong believer in sliders ... or,,, maybe I should've put next on my list: either get my eyes fixed, or buy a new pair of RX sunglasses! My current ones are approx. 3 prescriptions outdated, so that is definately numero ono!!! Before the Disco, like you, (i think?) I had a Trooper. Before that, a Ford truck, Toyota Celica, old POS jeep type thang that barely ran, a bike, surfboard & fins, and (most importantly ) horses, LOL Kim oh and lets see, roller skates, skate boards, scooter, tricycle ... hehehe |

An afterthought: I just got to thinking ... (can you smell the burned rubber?) ... Seriously, it IS cool how much I've learned in one year ... Disco Web was the key. I never would have made it even close if not for Disco Web. I'm going to go back to the archives and try to find a link about protection and first mods that helped me enormously. Just can't empahasize it enough. (Only problem is, I don't know how to post the link, lol, I'll try). And, (this is NOT a shameless plug, I swear) just watching the videos available here ... I could see the different trucks with different stuff, different drivers, terrain, etc., and get an idea of how the Disco worked. My truck is a little larger than the D1's, but still ... great enlightment. Not so sure Kyle, Ho, and Ax would want me to be the testimonial figure for Disco Web (LOL, more like the poster child, HAHAHA) but ... Thanks Disco Web!! Kim a little 'slow', but not ungrateful! |

Brad, sorry to horn in on your thread here, but here is the thread I was talking about above: http://www.discoweb.org/archive2001/messages/1774/1668.html?992300485 I know this may not necessarily be what you were looking for, but a lot of good info for others wondering about this stuff. There were 50 posts on this thread. It was entitled Front recovery points/rear recovery points (June 11th i think?) but it had a bunch of other info/opinions in it. The archives are full of gold as well. Kim |
