I've been trolling this list for a few days, while trying to decide whether or not to buy a Discovery. It's a big jump, I'm replacing a 95 Mustang GT (last of the 5.0s) that's just starting to have too many problems. I did it today, and took delivery of a shiny burgundy 98 Discovery. I'm happy, and I've traded speed for lots of leather, buttons, and the ability to once again go offroad. The better part of the day was spent figuring out what I've been referring to as "Britishisms". Is there anyone here who didn't always roll down the wrong window at a drive through? Strangely labeled and placed buttons aside, I've run into a problem. When checking out the Disco before I bought it, I of course opened the rear door. In fact it hasn't been touched since then. I can't for the life of me get it open now though! I've tried it with the inside and outside door handles, and yes, it is unlocked :-) Is there some sort of "safety" feature at work here? This is my first Rover, and I've seen enough strangeness to be hesitant to rule out anything. It seems as if it just isn't coming unlatched, I have what feels to be full freedom of movement on both inside and outside latches, and the door lock clicks nicely in the up and down position. Thanks in advance for any help! ScottP |

Hello Scott, Sounds like you are having the same problem I was having. The door locks but wouldn't open from either the inside and out. One question, is the latch mechanism on the outside handle stuck in the pressed in position? Mine was and found out that all it was was a little spring that 'broke' or got loose. I know there is something here on this discussion board how to replace it yourself because right now for the life of me I can't remember it. But given some time some of the more experienced veterans will be more than willing to help you out. Other than that good luck and trust me it will be a blast driving off road. JJ Fulay |

AHA! I just got back from the parking lot, and yes, although I thought I had full range on the outside latch, I in fact do not. It stays almost completely down (opening position). I got a screwdriver under it, and pulled it all the way out, but it doesn't seem to work anymore, so I assuming I broke something on my first day of ownership I'll try looking for a fix on this site, but if anyone else has any insights, they would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the help, I'm happy to find out that there is a helpful group of enthusiasts for my new "quirky" vehicle. Your response, and a very detailed email from josh (thanks man) were all I needed for a 30 second fix! ScottP |

We had the sticky door problem on our '98 too. Happens about once every six months or so. We just squirt a little of the WD-40 in there and are all happy again! |

If that doesn't work, you may have to replace the lock assembly. I just got done doing that on my 96 D1 and it took me about 4 hours. Why 4 hours? Its those damn little retainer clips on the rods that just don't seem to want to go back on right. Anyway, I was having the exact same problem, tried a new actuator, tried the lube trick above etc. Now that I've got the old lock to goof around with, I'm going to try and patch it up for a spare. |
