I need some help.
I was changing an injector this morning. I took off the plenum and the thing that looks like a pipe organ to get good access to the fuel rail.
I pulled one of the clips off the injector and the little bastard jumped right off my pliers and went into one of the holes in the top of the engine. I think it is the intake manifold.
It was really a great shot...nothin but net!

I tried to get it out by sticking a magnet in there, but couldn't find it.

I am going to try a different magnet, but if that doesn't work then what is my next step?

Where do those holes lead to. What would be there to stop the clip? What can I damage by probing around in there with a magnet?
I am really trying to avoid pulling off the next layer of engine, because it is starting to look more complicated.

WWKD?

Thanks,
Greg

Pull away! If you don't get the clip out you will destroy something inside, (piston, valve...etc.) Good luck....Dave

OK...but is there a way to get to it without pulling engine apart any further?

How hard of a job is it to do?

As long as you get it out of the intake manifold before you next turn over the engine it should be fine.

But yes, you are probably going to have to unbolt that sucker to get the piece out. By all means fish around with a magnet first you might get lucky.

How about a strong vacuum cleaner? Rig a hose to it that may get close enough to move it....

Oh yeah, stuff clean rags in the holes so you don't loose a contact in one of them next!

try taping a straw on a vacuum nozzle and see if that picks it up. Then try a clothes hanger with gum.

I think I'd use a wad of sticky duct tape on the clothes hanger rather than gum -- if the gum falls off in there you're just compounding the problem!!!

No you're not. If the gum falls off you just send in a small rat to get the gum. Now if the rat doesn't come out...

Send in a small boa? But then if the snake eats the rat while in the motor...

"It's Space Ball One, she's gone from suck to blow."

Hit all your neighbors up to see who has the largest shop-vac. My dad did something similar and it worked in his small block Chevy. But then again he also did it to my first car while teaching me how to work on it. He failed to tell me that a small socket fell behind the timing cover (VW). It wasn't until I drove away that he came clean.

For starter I need to know EXACTLY where it went ? Into a cylinder ? INto the intake tract ?If it went into a cylinder you can slide a magnet into the plug hold and slowly rotte the crank to get the piston ontop to narrow your search area. If it went into the intake tract you will need to remove the upper plenum (Thats right Peters , the dreaded PLenum). Do not start the truck until the piece is accounted for.

Why is the plenum dreaded Kyle?

I need to remove mine to replace leaking valve cover gaskets. Is there something secret and sacred I need to know in advance? The workshop manuals haven't frightened me away from it. I thought it looked pretty straight-forward, although I still can't tell if there is a gasket or just Hylomar.

Oh yeah, a 'wheeling friend of mine just scrambled the diesel in his Series II by dropping a small shard of metal into it! OUCH! A week before he was headed to Moab.
