Im the process of purchasing a Discovery and Im not sure what model to get? I plan to use it as my daily driver but also take it on the trail often. I have herd good things about the late model Disco I for off-road use but Im not sure about the Disco II? Is one model better than the to other? Or are there certain options I should get or stay away from? I would prefer the Disco II? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Doug

The D2 has ETC and to me that's a plus. It also has more cargo room and a better transfer case (even if the earlier LT230's don't fail often). DON'T get a late 2001 or 2002 D2 since they can't be modified for the CDL. The 1999 and early 2001's can take the D1 linkage to give you a CDL. If you go off road this is a MUST and the D2 with CDL and ETC will go lots of places a D1 couldn't.

On the down side the D2 has worse departure angle than the D1 and the frame cross member on the D2 is a PITA with the brake over angle. The D1, IMO, has better axles and are much more field repairable. And the steering knuckles on the D1 are much better than the ones offered in the D2 for off road use.

The LT230SE is uprated to handle more torque. But that's why I said the earlier T-Cases don't fail. The newer LT230SE has improvements over the LT230Q and LT230T but that's not to say that the older cases were broke.

One other thing that the D1 has that's better I think is with the factory wheels. I'm not 100% sure on this but I think the factory alloy wheels on the D1's, D90's and RRC have a deeper seat in the rim for the bead of the tire while the RR 4.0/4.6 and D2's have a more conventional bead seat. Not 100% on that but maybe someone can confirm that.

Al why would ETC on D2 let you go more places?

If the departure angle is less on the D2, then wouldn't the D1 go more places.

yes and no. Depends on the situation. Traction on the D2 becomes less of an issue in a D2 with ETC and CDL over a D1 with only the CDL. Even on level ground the D2 is less likely to stop when it gets cross axled with ETC (with or without the CDL). The ETC will however fail when it gets cross axled in a hill and then the CDL is needed to keep moving. When you think of a D2 with ETC and CDL try and picture what a D1 with limited slip diffs could do. So the D2 will go places where traction is an issue that the D1 may have problems with. However, you may drag your ass end over everything to get there. Both problems on each vehicle can be fixed with either a locker on a D1 or a lift and rear bumper on the D2.

I think we are comparing apples to oranges regarding the ETC and departure angle. The ETC will get you more places but the departure angle is a henderance.
I would go for the D2 with ETC and get a CDL kit for cheep. The departure angle can always be modified for better performance but can't get ETC and CDL performance on a D1 unless you spend some cash on lockers.
Just my 2 cents.

Unless someone wants to try the D2 SLABS unit on a D1. Then you get all the other goodies that the D1 has with the traction of the D2.

Thanks Al. There are a lot of differences in the D1 and D2. Personally, I do not think that the decreased departure angle is good. The ETC, ACE and other tech features of the D2 are very nice for some of the reasons that you point out. However, I do not like these either (personal preferance). I would prefer to solve the problem of the D1 with lockers...

If I were buying a Disco now I might consider size, price and reliability as the determining factors for purchase. Price being the key one.

I can't say I disagree with you Brian. There are things the D1 has I wish my D2 had. But the 1999-2000 and some 2001 D2's are still very nice.

To me the worst thing about the D2 is price. I might consider a 99-01 D2 in about 5 years, but then again I will likely just be getting my D1 to the point where I really like it (or so I hope).

The D2 might be a bit better on road (or so I have heard).

To the original poster, I would likely try to find the latest model of either vehicle. From my experience there are no options that I would stay away from other then the Rear AC and Rear Jump seats. Think hard about these if you think that you really need them (I had have them and can definitely live without them).
