An alternative to changing diff ratios in order to run larger tires is to swap in a Defender transfer case, yeah? They had 3.54 diffs but ran ~235/85/16 tires, right?
OK, assuming that is correct, does the whole thing need to be swapped or could a disco case be rebuilt with different gear/gears from a defender case?

Only TDi defender and 93 110s had a different gear ratio (1.4 to 1 high range).

All US D90s had the same ratio as discos(1.2ish to 1).

All low ranges are the same.

Things can be swapped but it is $$$ and a bit of a PITA.

Stock D-90 tire size is 265-75-R16 as well.

Hmmmm....so howcome I haven't heard that you have to change diffs to run 235/85 on a Defender? Are they that much lighter that it's not too bad on them?

I just changed my disco 200Tdi transfer case to 1.4 high range with maxidrive crawler gears. Standard low range is the same for all unless you change to these low range gears. The engine seems to rev out very quickly for not alot of forward motion in high range.
If you only want to go to 32's i'd stay with the 1.22 high range gears.

PS Cost to do the job with all new parts $4950 AUD

I don't know to be honest with you. I am still not 100% sure of my knowledge regarding gear ratios and the like. At least not enough to establish opinions. I do know for a fact that the stock Defender 90 tire size is 265-85-R16. At least on our 1995 Station Wagon. Im sorry that I could not be of more help. Thanks.

Okay. 265/75/16 is pretty close to 235/85 in OD.

Wrong - That was just a typo. If you notice 265-75-R16 was the size in my original post. I apologize.

Has anyone used the LT230RC transfer box that Great Basin Rover sells? Results?

I believe it's got the standard high range but with a lower low range than stock. If I had one, I'd probably want to keep the standard differentials for highway use with 245/75 tires.

Norm,

I had them installed 2 weeks ago but have yet to use them offroad.
They whine a lot becuase of the straight cut gears but you sure do go slow, I now have 56:1 low low ratio
