The last few days I have noticed an obvious whine at highway speeds only off throtle. My vehicle is a 1999 D1. Any ideas???

Sounds like typical transmission whine. They pretty much all do that and I don't think it's anything to be concerned about.

My 97 has made the same noise since new. You can tell it's the transmission as you accelerate and hit 50MPH, the whine will reduce, thus eliminating the transfer case as the source of the noise.
As Shane noted, don't worry.

LOL...Here I go again, making duplicate comments on a duplicate question. Sometimes you just can't help yourself from responding.

A friend of a friend(!) recently purchased a used DII. She said that when she let off of the gas, she could hear a "whining" noise. When she took it in, they found out that the rear diff was going bad. I guess under throttle, the slack was taken up in the gears, but when coasting the tolerences opened up and you could hear the noise(?). Worth looking into though.

I had the same problem with the whine in my D2. I have since turned up the radio and it's now fixed. I got tired of tracking it down and having the dealer tell me it's the t-case. It didn't happen all the time and not at all speeds either but generally when I let off the gas from 40mph down to about 15 or 20 mph.
