My 96 disco is coughing black smoke under load or at about 3000 RPM. It also sounds like the valves are rattling or engine misfire. Ignition? Valves? Timing Advance? Any ideas or suggestions where to start. Thanks.

I would start with a nice top end cleaning

What's the best way to clean it? ATF Fluid? Fuel Injector Cleaner? I've heard much speculation.
Thanks,
Mark

Kyle, is there anyway to clean the top end without removing anything? Some have said to pour atf in there. others say engine cleaner from the local parts store, any recommendations? Would cleaning an engine cause the oil pickup to clog?

Well , there are several ways to do this. Years ago I used small amounts of water in a vacum line or ATF. This worked for me and cleaned the top end great. But times have changed and so has the availability of products to do this job. I think BG has some nice stuff now and you might wanna look into that. No , Bill , it wont affect the crank case at all... You simply introduce this cleaner into the intake tract and it gets sucked into the combustion chambers. There are various ways to get it in there. I just pull a big vacume line and insert it into the container that the cleaner is in. You wanna keep the Revs up on the engine a little to get the vacum going good and to keep the cylinders cleared of the solution so you dont get fouling. I also dont just give a ginat gulp all at once. I just give it a little sip at a time , giving it time to clear out inbetween drinks until all of your solution is gone.... Sometimes you have to do this a few times. It really depends on the amount of carbon build up.... The reason carbon build up does what Mark is talking about is that its in the combustion chamber and gets heated to the point that it sets off an ignition event even though the pistion is not in the right position for firing. This sets everything off balance and the engine starts running very inefficiently......

Thanks Kyle, I'll try that. Do you know where a good vacuum line is on the Discovery?
Thanks,
Mark
