is there a general rule for how long a high flow catalytic converter should last?

Well if its not damaged LR will give you around 80k miles. thats when the warranty runs out....

what kind of aftermarket replacements are available (cheaper than genuine)?

NRP has direct replacement, but otherwise, I don't think there are any bolt up replacements. You can cut the old cats out and put in universal.

go to a hotrod or racing store
I used one from a cadilac, on my MGB and it worked great, Freeflow cat, and a whole lot cheaper than anything else. I got mine at Calhouns Speedshop in Alexandria virginia.
