Last night, I was driving home (at a sedate leisurely pace) and at ~10 feet from my driveway I hear a loud POP followed by several shudders. My Disco starts shaking heavily and I jam on the brakes, and inspect. I couldn't see anything wrong. So, I just pushed it on to the driveway without starting it back up. So today I got in my Disco and drove around for a bit. On a straight road, everything felt normal, but when I turned, the tires squealed and there was a noticable clunk coming from underneath. Also the steering seemed a bit heavier than before, and it vibrated. What do you think happened? Did I snap an axle or something? I'm going to take it to a shop tomorrow, but I wanted to hear from you guys first.

Its probably not a cv if you can drive without diff lock.

jack a wheel up and see if it spins (if yes=axle/cv)

Could also be trans/t-case related.

FWIW YMMV etc.

If the joint hasnt suffered a complete melt down it will ride for quite some time just all bound up..... Ofcourse you are correct in saying it could be the T case... That diff breaks as well..

Hard to tell over the internet.

The whole turned and tires squeal pointed to t-case diff as another possibility

Ron

PS I have a spare cross shaft for the center diff if you need it. Bobby Long is now making longfields for rovers if you are looking for an upgraded cv with a waranty.

Well me :) and a couple of D90 guys on huge tires 37in+, and about 1500 people with toyotas.

115 gets your CV (this is an exchange type thing) heat treated, ring welded on, cage hardened. First one your break is free, second is half price.

So 250 a pair.

his turn squeel clunk sounds like a front axel diff...

that sounds like a good price for the cv upgrade

Wonder how long (hehehe pun intended) they will last.

Those D90 guys with 37 boggers and 38in SXs are not east on cvs.

Is how to get in touch. He just started in the rover market. I am the beta tester (my first one was screwed up but everything is now sorted out). I think some of his other clients put more stress on them than I do. He is a wealth of practical cv/birfield info and according to the toyota guys the stuff is damn near unbreakable (the only way they can break them is with 4340 30 spline inner axles and even then it is close as to the birf or the axle breaking first).

So the guy HAS to have a core since he is just starting into this right ? You know if the core can be already destroyed ???? LOl

I think he can scrounge some or they seem readily available. This is the way it is until he gets more rover business.

As long as the core is in one piece (ie the bell) the inners are the same as some common domestic application so thats another option.

Just to be clear, you get your own cvs back (not kyles, or musky's)

When I spoke to Bobby, he said that he did not have any LR cvs as house cores. He requires that you send your CVs in to him, and he will treat and can return the next day.

Keep in mind that the warranty is not a 'replacement' CV but 'free' heat treating etc on the first replacement, and 50% on the second replacement. Of course, you have to supply the CVs

I hope to do the treatment before the end of the year.

Does the extra ring interfere with the swivels or spindles in any way ? Ron did you convert to the early 110 type cv's ? What truck are you testing them on ?
TIA Ed
