I am looking to buy an early 90's Range Rover and I am looking for advice on any specific years to look for, or to stay away from. Thanks in advance |

If it were me I would go for a 87-88 Rangie with CDL over the VC. But that's just me |

89 is 3.9 without abs still 87-88 are 3.5 without abs , but cdl there are a few rare 91 rovers out there that here like hunter models or something that did not have abs i hate abs, i am biased rd |

If you're looking for off-roading, they all work well. 93-95 have the air bags and those usually die and need to be replaced. 91+ have that dang seat memory control I want oh so bad.... Hunter has cloth seats and they even had an optional gun rack for the back (I don't see Ford offering that!!) Check for work done. Be suspect when there is little record as this means you may have to do more yourself. pwc |

This would be entirely for off road, I figured it would be better to outfit an old rover, rather than my D2. Makes me think, d1 or range rover? Which one would be easier/cheaper to outfit, and which is better off road. |

well i'd go with a well kept 1987-88 range rover then. or maybe a 1989 if you are willing to do the t-case swap to get the lt230 case (it is manual locking) anything 1989 and older has a Borg Warner viscous coupling automatic locking center diff that simply isn't as good at offroad, though i hear it is great in the snow. have you looked at www.rangerovers.net ? tons on information there. one of my favorites is this page http://www.lrfaq.org/RR/FAQ.RR.RangeRoverC_US.html other ed, i hear you,,, i'd like to go that quaife route too. i like the on road benifits on my BW, and would like to mimic that with an LSD lt230, i recently emailed ashcroft and asked them advice on swapping in the lt230, it took them two wekks to get back to me and then the answer was quite short, i guess a lot of people pick there brain and go somewhere else. anyway, i asked if he knew any ohter affordable options for a center LSD and he said you dont even need it.. i didnt like that answer. rd |

Swapping in a LT230 transfercase with CDL into a RR classic from a Disco 1 is a direct bolt in job. Only cutting that needs to be done is to widen the transfercase shifter opening in the console a little and if you use a center console from a 87-88 RR you won't have to do that. Did the swap in my '89 RR in a long weekend. Mike |

mike, you used a disco drive shaft in the front , right? hendrik did the swap and said his Range Rover shaft wouldnt fit and i assume he didnt have the disco shaft so he had a double CV shaft made up (which cured other isses too) just tripple checking thasnk rob |

Rob, I have been checking the swap out also , I have a lt230 in my garage but will wait for the lsd fund to mature . Thats limited slip you doper not that kid stuff . I asked Bill at GBR and he gave the same advice as MIke only need a Disco front and cut the console also need the linkages or you could skip the cut and use a solenoid kit that GBR sells . Come on powerball . Ed |

Yes, you will need to use the Disco front drive shaft because of the different lengths and you will need to change the right side transmission mount as well. The left side is the same with either transfercase. Mike |
