when I try and start my 98 D1 with 41K miles. I think Battery is OK because lights work and radio has not lost its settings. I can jump the truck but it takes a few tries. When I am in the truck Tick sounds like it is on pasanger side by the floor. I checked serpintine belt from post further down the page and the belt is tight and appears fine. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

snowchutes,
I take it the truck in not turning over, just ticking..?? If so, it sounds like your battery, or your starter.

The starter takes a lot more juice than your lights or radio.

I'd check the battery first, if it's OK, pull the starter and have it bench tested.

You're just hearing the solenoid clicking - low battery voltage will cause the solenoid to engage, but does not have enough juice to turn the starter motor/engine.

Either battery itself is shot and/or something is draining the battery or the alternator is not charging it properly.

If it still takes a bit to turn over even when jumping, I'd suspect the battery is toast - but pull the alternator off and have it bench tested also to be sure.

Starter is my guess. If it was a battery, it would have started with a jump (on the first try.

I am going with the starter as well , the extra juice is just helping it over the "Hump"

Thanks, GUys. My feeling was the starter as well. After I get it jumped and drive for a good half hour or more, I pull into garage turn it off, try to restart and then just tick, tick tick. I'll have starter and alternator checked.

I would also check the Batt cables both postive and negative. I had to change mine last year the postive was so corroded there were large bumpps in it. The corrosion did not allow the starter to gett the required voltage. I also noticed at the same time that it would not come out of park. At first i thought it might be the brake light switch. i needed to roll it back to get it on the flat bed to be towed home. LOL i need to check the tow vrs dring miles and figure out the ratios. Only car ive ever owned that i needed to use tow services...

Ticking Noise Eh?

Sounds like a switch to me........Relays like to tick when they become AFU.

Cables are pretty clean. Barely any corrosion on them.

If the battery was really bad it wouldn't take a jump so I wouldn't rule that out completely. I have to replace batteries all the time in the summer for customers and when some get bad enough they don't want to start even with a jump.

If the battery was really bad wouldn't I lose all the radio presets? Also wouldn't it recharge after I drive with it after I get it jumped? Also headlights, interior lights etc all work fine.

Wouldn't necessarily loose presets, the battery will sit at 12 volts (+/-) unless a load is put on it. Put a volt meter on the battery and watch the voltage while you or someone else cranks the engine, it shouldn't drop much lower than 9-10 volts while cranking or I say it's most likely bad. That said, if your starter is bad it may draw excessive amperage and make your battery voltage drop below 10 volts.

It could definitely just be a bad starter, just didn't want you to rule out a bad battery because I see that a lot and batteries are more likely to fail than the starter.
