Has anyone had a problem with their Hella 4k's I am running 3 of them on the front with the factory (LR)supplied harness. OK as far as 12v goes I am very knowlegable but; just in case I had the dealer do the install just so it would be under warrenty if any thing happen. Anyway I got them installed about 2yrs ago after picking up the car I used the light about two days later and they stopped working. I took it back and they said somthing about a loose wire. Then I didn't use them for quite a while after that. I came back home (to CA) and on the drive home had oppertunity to use them and again burned out. I took the car back to LR and they said it was installed incorectly and burned out a BCM so they re-wired everything and gave me the run around on the warrenty issue but in the end did it for free. That was 1 1/2yrs ago I used the lights a couple of times since then so I figured it was OK. Well I went wheelin this weekend and it happened again. and the car is at the dealer. It seems to me the the light draw to much current to go thought the factory BCM. I told the dealer to oly use the output of the BCM to run 3 relays. He said you can't that the computer will see a unacounted for load on the battery and give a error code. He's full of shit he just doesn't want to admit his dealership f'ed up. Anyway this time the fix it I am going to re-wire how I think it should go since the dealer said it's not under warrenty anyway (the car is but this part isn't). Anybody with simular problem? it only burns out if the lights are on for more the about 10mins Ken |

I would just use the Hella harness.. wire the relay to the dash and directly supply the lights from the battery... I would mess with the LR harness.. its not rated to draw that much power.. also mount the relay so that water/mud & dirt do not accumulate... occasionally pull the fuse and clean.. it will corrode under the hood and cause you problems.. Also what are the lights mounted too? brush guard?? watch for the typical ground issues with LR.. just clean and retighted all grounds.. I wouldn't depend on the mounts to supply the ground.. Hella's should have a seperate ground wire in the harness to be attached to coach work ground post. |

They are mounted on bumper. I plan or re-wireing them just how you described once they fix the BCM. When I told them to wire it like this they said you can't because if you go straight to the battery for power when you turn on the light it will put a draw on the battery and since that draw is not going through any computer is will be unaccounted for and give a error reading. I asked him how disco's with multipal audio amps hooked to the battery deal with this situation. He didn't have a answer. ken |

guy is full of shit.. the computer doesn measure the amount of power is drawn nor how much the alt is working to supply... best plan if you have $$ is to install 2nd battery with isolater (electronic is best.) and run all acc. thru the second battery... Can this guy describe how to run a winch thru the bcm?? its no different than light.. you just need the current.. in the shortest possible run that you can.. and heaviest wire too... |

Got my car back as expected it fried the LR wire harness but nothing else. I haven't seen what size wires the harness uses but I am going to just use the current harness since it is already hooked up and use them to run three relays directed straight to the battery. (for some reason the LR guy now says this is a good idea)!! I wounder what happened to all his tecno-babble. Anyway who cares it was a free fix and at a time that it was in for 32000 mile service anyway. Ken |

Ken, I have a very simple solution for your problem. Just send me the Hella 4k's and order yourself some replacement LR lights to go on those LR looms. Then all will be fine. |
