I just bought a 99 DII with 50k on it. The 2nd day I had it, the service engine soon light came on. The dealer says they will diagnose it for $160 (80 diag and 80 labor), and if it's something expensive they will cover it, if it's only an hour or so to "repair" they will charge me.
My questions is:
If I have it reset and there's something mechanically wrong, like catalytic converters, or electrically wrong, it should come back on right?
Or if it's something stupid like the gas cap was loose it should stay off, if the problem is fixed. I just don't want to pay them $80 for them to say it was a loose gas cap. But I don't want to reset it if something mechanicaly or electrically is actually wrong, and have a false sense of security, because the light doesn't come back on again.
I had Auto Zone read it and it had a powertrain code 00, and some chassis codes they could not decipher.

thanks,
Brian

service engine light just means its time to get serviced the Check engine light is the one you have to watch for.

Brad - I don't think the Disco II has a check engine light. There is only the SES light. At least my 1999 DII only has the Sevice Engine Soon light.

Brian - I think the SES light will reset itself after 40 start cycles with no faults. If you're able to grab the OBDII number codes from it I'll give you what they are. I can't say I can tell you what needs to be fixed but I might be able to point you in the direction (or someone here will).

That only applies to the Disco I with the OBDI system.
The 99 OBDII system only has one light, not 2.
But thanks for the input.

Al,

I tried getting them from Auto Zone, but they were worthless.
I don't know if that's good or bad?
My wife had just put gas is in it, so I'm hoping she left the cap loose maybe? And that's why Auto Zone couldn't get any good codes from it.
But I'm not sure how loose it would have to be to trigger the SES light?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
The Disco I's have OBDII in them and the two lights. OBDI is the little box with a read out on it that gives the code.

They didn't give you any code at autozone? Well, if there's no fault code, there's not fault, right? If it's just the Service Engine as in the classic sense (when there were two lights and the other was Check Engine), then that is for a reminder for the 50K service. Just how far over 50K are you exactly?

If you're in the Seattle area, I'd be glad to hook it up and see what it really is.

Question for other smarter people: Does the SEL give a Rover only code?

PWC,

I did not know that.
The codes I got from Auto Zone were a powertrain code of 00. Which is no help.
Then It had chassis codes 1_ _9
and 09_ _, also no help.
It had just hit 50,100 miles.
I know they say the DI's have 52,000 SES light.
But no one seems to know if the DII has one that comes on at 50k instead.
Thanks for the offer, but I'm in California.
I have access to a $2,000 Snap On hand held.
Would it be more likely to give me useable code then the $150 unit form Auto Zone?
Should I have it reset and see if comes on again?
I'm just afraid of it coming on again in 2 weeks and then the dealer telling no matter what it is, it won't be covered under warranty.

Thanks,
Brian

'94-'95 Discos are OBD-I, with separate check-engine(yellow) and service-engine(red) lights.

'96-'99 Discos are OBD-II, also with separate check-engine(yellow) and service-engine(red) lights.

'99-on Disco IIs are OBD-II, but the check-engine and service-engine lights have been combined into one light.

Just after 50k, the "Service-Engine" light comes on on the earlier Discos, so I would *guess* that the light is on as an emissions-maintenence reminder for an DII, too.

FWIW....

My advice is have autozone reset the codes if you've noticed to decline in performance. A code of P1__9 could just be a O2 sensor and that will kick on again. I couldn't find 09__ though.

Unless of course it wouldn't be then covered under warranty though. How long long is the warranty again?

50,000 or 4 years for most of it, 6 years unlimited miles for corrosion, 8 years or 80,000 miles for catalytic converters.... I think I've got that all right....

yeah it's 4yr, 50k.
I'm just past that and they said they would cover it if I bring it in next week.
If I reset it, will it come on immediately again if it is an O2 sensor or something serious?
If so, then i'll have it reset, and if it doesn't come on I'll cancel my appt.
If not then I'll leave it on and have the dealer check it out.

It will come on within maybe 100-200 miles or a couple days if that's what it is.

In this case, and after reading the last post about the 80,200 mile disco not getting warranty service, you might be better off just leaving them on and having the dealership check it. Because if it is something and you don't trip it again before the appt., then it comes on after the appt., you might be causing yourself more hurt.

That's kind of what I was thinking.
It's worth the 480 to have them say nothing is wrong.
My appt. in on the 4th also. I'll let you guys know what they find out.

Thanks,
Brian

I also forgot to mention that they have to drive the truck for 10 miles,is this normal testing distance?(for Service engine soon light on).I wonder what they find out on Brian's truck.
