Problem:
Recently, while traveling highly corrugated/wash board roads at moderate speeds, all of the turn signals start flashing in unison. The light flashing is similar to that of the hazard lights, however, the hazard light switch has not been tripped, nor is the hazard light warning light illuminated. To stop the flashing lights, The Ignition must be turned off and then the engine must be restarted. The lights will only stop flashing, when the ignition key is turned to start the engine.

Questions:
1) What the heck is going on?
2) Assuming that this is not a "feature", what can be done to fix it?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Paul

it's a feature.
there are sensors that are triggered after a roll over for the lights go

the information is in the owners manual.

I cought some air in my D1 at Los Coyotes a few months ago and on impact the flashers started. I always wondered what caused that. Thanks Ho

I don't think it's a feature. This is the best explanation I have found:

Ho is correct it is a feature, first the hazard lights go off, then the fuel pump shuts off. Now there was a problem with this feature of course...some are set too sensitive so they need to be adjusted.

Michel, you are talking about the inertia switch. That's a feature which works the way you describe. The flashers go off, and the fuel pump shuts off. You reset the switch, and go on your marry way. But there are issues with the alarm relays as well. I have had the same thing happen on my Disco a couple of times, I go fast over washboards, or hit a rock to hard, and the flashers go off, while the fuel pump doesn't, and the car keeps running fine. I have to shut it off and restart the engine to reset the flashers when this happens.

They all do that axel, not just yours. I used to get it a lot with the stock suspension, after the HD suspension, I haven't had it. No bottoming out.

I'm sure the first phase of the inertia swicht is it thinks you hit someone, and puts on the flashers.

Phillip,

Bosch is German for Lucas.

LOL, J/K!!!!! :)

While BMW owned LR, they began using more and more Bosch in place, but most of it is still Lucas. Look at the back of your key-fob... Look at the factory ignition wires... I can't say much about DIIs, but my '99 DI is full of Lucas.... VSS, MAF, TPS, ignition coils, etc. etc. etc. I think that the DII does have a lot more Bosch than mine, but I'm sure that there is still "Lucas inside"....

:)

LOL....

Joseph Lucas, the Prince of Darkness... :)

Lucas was/is the maker of electrics for automobiles in England. British electrics have a habit of becoming quirky with age. MG, Triumph, Land Rovers, Jaguar, etc. etc. any of the classic British marquees are known for their "odd" behavior when it comes to their electrical systems.

So, Lucas has become an easy (and somewhat deserved) target for British car jokes.

Honest truth, as far as Land Rovers go... any other vehicle that has gone through what an old Series Land Rover has lived through, would be in the junkyard. It's not that Lucas electrics are bad, per se, but that in many cases, the vehicles are owned by enthusiasts who are keeping the vehicles on the road long past the point where other manufacturers' electrical systems would also have started to have similar trouble.

Surf the web a bit, and you'll find pages dedicated to Lucas, the Prince of Darkness...

Thanks for the info on the original post. How difficult (in terms of physical access) is it to remove the relay, per MIke's cross post on LRX? Are there any undesired effercts or removing this relay?

Cheers,
Paul

This blinking is a feature, and is described in the user manual. Additionally, if your safety door locks are pushed, the five buttons unlock at the same time, and you experiment special terror effects...
Mine did this one time as i falled in an unespected cut in the sand due by rainwater (height approx 15cm=6")
